La Jolla Playhouse announced today an exciting new production for its 2010/11 subscription season: the world premiere musical Little Miss Sunshine. The Tony Award-winning creative team of composer/lyricist William Finn and writer/director James Lapine, who previously collaborated on the Tony Award-winning musicals Falsettos and The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, will bring their latest project to the Playhouse. The production will run February 15 - March 27, 2011 in the Mandell Weiss Theatre.

'Grey Gardens,' 'Saturday Night Live' et al. Added to National Film Registry

Earlier today the National Film Registry of the Library of Congress published a list of 25 films to be added to the list of over 500 respected movies dating back to 1891. As specified by the National Film Preservation Act, the Library of Congress names 25 movies every year to the registry that are 'culturally, historically, or aesthetically' significant. The movies do not need to be feature-length, or even have had a theatrical release; however they do need to be at least 10 years old.

La Jolla Playhouse announced today the cast and creative team of its upcoming world-premiere musical Little Miss Sunshine, by the Tony Award-winning creative team of composer/lyricist William Finn and playwright/director James Lapine. Mr. Lapine has enjoyed a long association with the Playhouse, having previously directed Merrily We Roll Along (1985) and Luck, Pluck and Virtue (1993). The production runs February 15 - March 27, 2011 in the Mandell Weiss Theatre.

Variety reports that Warren Beatty has been named the recipient of the The Art Directors Guild's Outstanding Contribution to Cinematic Imagery Award. Not undeserving of the nod, only Beatty and Orson Welles have received Academy Award nominations as an actor, director, writer and producer on the same film, an achievement Beatty did with Heaven Can Wait and Reds. Beatty will be presented with the prize on February 13 at the Beverly Hilton.

In 2007, the Obie Award-winning director scored a direct hit with his extended run of The Pillowman; since then, the Academy Award-winning author released his first feature film, In Bruges. Now Berkeley Rep reenlists these seasoned artists for another vicious comedy: The Lieutenant of Inishmore. Staged in the state-of-the-art Roda Theatre, this edgy farce begins previews on April 17, opens April 22, and closes May 17. Actors Jill Eikenberry and Michael Tucker, who were to appear with host Isaiah Sheffer in Public Radio International?s popular series 'Selected Shorts,' on May 4 at the JCCSF, have had to cancel the engagement due to conflicting obligations.
