Review - Low Blow, Mr. Fierstein

As one of the critics who championed A Catered Affair, my favorite new musical of the season, I was sad to hear they've put up the closing notice.  And while I understand Harvey Fierstein may be a little miffed at the reception the show received from many of the critics, I'm not especially happy to read the sweeping generalizations he's quoted as giving in a recent Michael Riedel column.

In today's New York Post, Michael Riedel is critical of the Harold and Mimi Steinberg Charitable Trust for granting a $200,000 prize for the purpose of nurturing American Playwrights to Tony Kushner instead of to a deserving unknown. Earlier this year the Ed Kleban Award for most promising musical theatre lyricist ($100,000) went to David Lindsay-Abaire for his work in the upcoming Shrek
