BWW Reviews: Handa Opera On Sydney Harbour's AIDA Combines The Timeless Story of Love and War With The Sydney Skyline
by Jade Kops - Mar 28, 2015

Giuseppe Verdi's AIDA, written to open the Khedivial Opera House in Egypt in 1871, proves its timelessness as Director Gale Edwards blends old and new worlds on the waterfront stage. With a 18meter tall partial ruins of the head of Nefertiti towering over Farm Cove, the original setting in Egypt has been retained but the line between classical and modern Egypt is blurred as ancient religion and traditional costumes sit alongside futuristic soldiers and military officers reminiscent of European World War I and World War II strategists.

ON THE NATURE OF THINGS Runs Now thru 3/27 at American Museum of Natural History
by BWW News Desk - Mar 26, 2015

In a career spanning more than four decades, the contemporary American choreographer Karole Armitage has been celebrated for blurring the boundaries between dance, music and art. Inspired by disparate, non-narrative sources—from 20th century physics, to 16th century Florentine fashion, to pop culture and new media—the classical dance vocabulary, in her hands, is given a needed shock to its system with speed and fractured lines, abstractions and symmetry countermanded by asymmetry.

Park Avenue Armory Dance Commission 'FLEXN' Begins Today
by BWW News Desk - Mar 25, 2015

Park Avenue Armory has commissioned dance pioneer Reggie (Regg Roc) Gray and visionary director Peter Sellars to create a performance piece that evolves the tradition of flex, the Brooklyn-born street dance. Characterized by sharp, rhythmic contortion, pausing, snapping, gliding, bone-breaking, and animated showmanship, the flex form evolved from the Jamaican bruk-up style popular in the dance halls and reggae clubs of Brooklyn in the 1990s. Opening today, March 25 and marking the first major presentation of the Armory's 2015 artistic season, FLEXN transforms the dance from its individual, combative style to create a collaborative work of social commentary inspired by both personal experience and current events. A series of public discussions and education initiatives complement the presentation.

BWW Reviews: CAROLE J. BUFFORD's New Show On the World's Oldest Profession Sizzles at 54 Below
by Alix Cohen - Mar 23, 2015

Just when one thinks Carole J. Bufford has thoroughly plumbed the genre for which she has so much affinity, the artist comes up with an audacious new show whose distinct focus, original format, and unblushing presentation delivers a fresh take. Heart of Gold: A Portrait of the Oldest Profession (this past Saturday night at 54 Below) offers a cavalcade of women who get paid to provide 'pleasure'--madams, streetwalkers, dancehall girls, and kept women from salty to sensuous, weary and bitter to a view from the catbird seat, enmeshed or looking back.
