TDF Receives $30,000 Grant from NEA for National Open Captioning Initiative

Rocco Landesman, Chairman of the National Endowment for the Arts, recently announced that Theatre Development Fund has been recommended for a grant of $30,000 to help support TDF's National Open Captioning Initiative, which will partner with 11 regional theatres during the 2011/12 theatre season.

TAP (TDF's Accessibility Programs), which has been instrumental in expanding open captioning on and Off Broadway, and regionally across the United States, announces the schedule of performances which will feature the service on Broadway this fall. Open captioning, which TDF introduced on Broadway in 1997, is more inclusive of all hard-of-hearing audiences than traditional sign language interpretation.

TDF's Accessibility Programs (TAP), which have been instrumental in expanding open captioning on and Off Broadway, and regionally across the United States, announce the schedule of performances which will feature the service on Broadway this spring.Open captioning, which TDF introduced on Broadway in 1997, is more inclusive of all hard-of-hearing audiences than traditional sign language interpretation. Through open captioning, an electronic text display, placed on the side of the stage, shows what the actors are saying or singing and describes sound effects on stage in real time.To date, TAP has organized more than 350 open-captioned performances of more than 250 different Broadway, Off Broadway and regional productions.

500 Deaf and Hard of Hearing Students to see Tarzan

By the end of March, over 500 elementary and secondary school students with hearing loss will have attend three Wednesday Matinee performances of Disney's Tarzan. The performances are simultaneously sign language interpreted and open captioned by Theatre Development Fund, which is bringing the students to the theatre through their 'Talking Hands' program, provided at no cost to the school or the students.
