Broadway and operetta unite in the New York Philharmonic's concert performance of Leonard Bernstein's satirical, effervescent musical CANDIDE, slated for release online on Digital Theatre, today 4 June 2014. The show features music by Leonard Bernstein, book adapted from Voltaire by Hugh Wheeler, lyrics by Richard Wilbur, and additional lyrics by Stephen Sondheim, John Latouche, Lillian Hellman, Dorothy Parker and Leonard Bernstein.

Just last night, the Lilly Awards celebrated women of distinction in musical theater at Playwrights Horizons. As previously announced, the 2014 Lilly Award winners include Kristen Anderson-Lopez, Susan Bernfield, Johanna Day, Winnie Holzman, Joyce Ketay, Mary Mitchell Campbell, Rebecca Naomi Jones, Dominique Morrisseau, Kelli O'Hara, Jen Silverman, Jeanine Tesori and Liesl Tommy. The 2014 Lilly Award presenters include Neena Beber, John Doyle, Branden Jacobs Jenkins, Julia Jordan, Anne Kaufman, Lisa Kron, Tony Kushner, Kwame Kwei-Armah, Justin Levine, Audra McDonald, Marsha Norman, Steven Pasquale, Stephen Schwartz and Stacey Mindich.

This year the Lilly Awards will celebrate women of distinction in musical theater in a special cabaret at West Bank Cafe (407 W 42nd Street, NYC), following the awards ceremony, which is set for Monday, June 2, at Playwrights Horizons. The cabaret will feature Kelli O'Hara, Rebecca Naomi Jones, Rebecca Luker, Kate Baldwin, Kenita Miller, The Broadway Boys, Graham Rowat, Katie Thompson, Lauren Pritchard, Taylor Noble, Jay Armstrong Jonson, The Skivvies (Lauren Molina & Nick Cearley) and Jason Robert Brown.

Academy Award® winner, singer, dancer, writer and activist Shirley MacLaine makes her Segerstrom Center for the Arts debut in her remarkable one-woman show, sharing personal stories, photos and film clips from her illustrious Hollywood career and fascinating personal life on Saturday, September 20 at 8 p.m. in the Rene?e and Henry Segerstrom Concert Hall. During An Evening with Shirley MacLaine, the celebrated artist will use her trademark wit and candid spirituality to discuss everything from her childhood to her early show business career to hanging out with The Rat Pack, JFK and His Holiness the Dalai Lama. MacLaine will also open her program to a question and answer session with the audience.

New York-based Beautiful Soup Theater, known for their revivals of Liliom, Rags, A Doll's Life and Moose Murders, has announced their 2014-2015 theatrical season.
The season will begin in September with a revival of Lillian Hellman's The Autumn Garden. A study of the defeats, disappointments and diminished expectations of people reaching middle age, Hellman's rarely-seen memory play returns to New York in a new production from Beautiful Soup Artistic Director Steven Carl McCasland.
