Berlin Philharmonic Wind Quintet with Jon Nakamatsu to Perform at Bates Recital Hall, 10/9

Texas Performing Arts welcomes back the ensemble that has virtually redefined the sound of the classic wind quintet, the Berlin Philharmonic Wind Quintet. For this performance, Van Cliburn Gold Medal-winning pianist Jon Nakamatsu joins the quintet. The concert is set for Thursday, October 9, 2014 at 7:00 pm at Bates Recital Hall (2350 Robert Dedman Dr.).

The Houston Symphony Presents WATTS PLAYS RACHMANINOFF 2, 9/19-21

On September 19, 20 and 21, the Houston Symphony will kick off its 101st season of classical subscription concerts, the first with Andres Orozco-Estrada as Music Director, in a performance of Rachmaninoff's deeply romantic Piano Concerto No. 2, featuring renowned pianist Andre Watts making his Houston return. Enduringly popular since its 1901 debut, the concerto's themes have found fame in movies such as Brief Encounter, The Seven Year Itch and the popular song 'All by Myself.'

André Watts burst upon the music world at the age of 16 when Leonard Bernstein chose him to make his debut with the New York Philharmonic in their Young People's Concerts, broadcast nationwide on CBS-TV. Only two weeks later, Bernstein asked him to substitute at the last minute for the ailing Glenn Gould in performances of Liszt's E-flat Concerto with the New York Philharmonic, thus launching his career in storybook fashion. More than 50 years later, André Watts remains one of today's most celebrated and beloved superstars.

This masterpiece, with music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and book by Hugh Wheeler, tells the darkly thrilling tale of a 19th century barber's bloody vengeance. With the help of Mrs. Lovett, the devious purveyor of "the worst pies in London," the cruelly wronged Mr. Todd exacts grisly revenge on the residents of London.
