Strawdog Theatre Company of Chicago announces their 22nd anniversary season of presenting 'the whole wide world in a little black box,' with the three mainstage plays focusing on the theme of 'why we fight': the Midwest premiere of Matt Pepper's 'St. Crispin's Day,' David Harrower's translation of Bertolt Brecht's 'Good Soul of Szechuan,' and Curt Columbus' translation of Anton Chekhov's 'Uncle Vanya.' Strawdog Theatre Company continues their 21st season with Curt Columbus' translation of Anton Chekhov's classic 'Cherry Orchard' (note this translation doesn't have 'The' in the title); directed by Strawdog Artistic Associate Kimberly Senior. Chekhov's dark comedy follows the aristocratic Gayev family as they return to their beloved orchard estate, desperate to save it from foreclosure. 'Cherry Orchard' was the last play written by Chekhov, whose esteemed canon includes 'Uncle Vanya,' 'The Seagull' and 'Three Sisters.' 'Cherry Orchard' runs about two hours with one intermission, and includes free admittance to Strawdog Late Night following the Friday and Saturday shows (Late Night schedule available on www.strawdog.org).

Strawdog Theatre Company completes their 21st season with Peter Barnes' dark comedy 'Red Noses,' directed by House Theatre's Matt Hawkins. In Barnes' 1985 Olivier Award-winning play, the Black Plague has wiped out half of Europe's 14th century population, so God gives the young priest Father Flote a special mission to save his suffering people ... make 'em laugh. Flote gathers a band of desperately untalented misfits, turns them into clowns and together they search for salvation with hilarity. Hawkins, who also directed House's hit production of 'Hatfield & McCoy,' makes his Strawdog directing debut with a 23-person cast. When an idealistic young woman arrives on a quest to free the 'souls' of the robots (and discovers there is no such thing), she manipulates the scientists to biologically remedy that fact. Soon after these 'improved' and extremely humanlike robots have been shipped all over the world, the inevitable robot revolution explodes, leaving questions about the survival of humanity and what actually makes a human.

Writers' Theatre Artistic Director Michael Halberstam and Executive Director Kathryn M. Lipuma announce William Inge's Picnic directed by David Cromer. The production runs September 16-November 16, 2008, at Writers' Theatre, 325 Tudor Court in Glencoe.
