MODERN MUSIC MASTERS: Mark Isham & ONCE UPON A TIME
by Pat Cerasaro
- Nov 6, 2011
Today we are going to continue our ongoing interview series focusing on composers whose work transcends merely one medium with this highly-lauded and respected film and television composer known for over 100 film scores in his thirty year career - such as his Academy Award-nominated work on CRASH; as well as this year's WARRIOR starring Tom Hardy, in theaters now - the immensely talented Mark Isham! Detailing the challenge of scoring each and every episode of ABC's hit new fairytale-themed series ONCE UPON A TIME and what it is like bringing the magical Disney wonderland of the show to musical life every week - as well as some hints of what we can expect in future episodes - we also look back at many of his most notable collaborations over his accomplished career, many with some of the finest theatre and film directors of our age - Sidney Lumet, Robert Altman and David Mamet included. Additionally, Isham shares insights into the work of fellow composers soon to be featured in this column - such as Alexandre Desplat and Alan Menken - as well as what we can look forward to from him in the future, near and far - on screens, both small and large! Plus - much, much more!

Shakespeare On Film Spotlight: THE MERRY WIVES OF WINDSOR
by Pat Cerasaro
- Jun 26, 2011
Coming quick and sprightly on the heels of the smash-hit movie theater presentation of Stephen Sondheim's COMPANY, Shakespeare's Globe London Cinema Series is setting out to do for Shakespeare and classical theatre what COMPANY did for Sondheim and musicals with THE MERRY WIVES OF WINDSOR. Beginning on Monday, hundreds of select movie theaters nationwide will present a special showing of Shakespeare's coy and daring comedy THE MERRY WIVES OF WINDSOR as the inaugural showing of The Globe London Cinema Series, and, with it, we, as the avid audience, will be ushered into a new era for Shakespeare - both live and on film. How easily and affordably we may now witness world-class entertainment from the very front rows of the finest playhouses in the world in the way only a special event cinema broadcast such as Shakespeare's Globe London Cinema Series presentation of THE MERRY WIVES OF WINDSOR can provide! Such are the joys of traveling to the nearest multiplex near you hosting a Shakespeare's Globe presentation - such as on Monday at 6:30 PM with MERRY WIVES - as opposed to a transatlantic flight and accommodations in the UK were you to try to catch the show live and in person (with the hope to score some rare tickets). Plus, you can't beat these seats - or the sights and sounds only the real, true home of W.S. - The Globe - can supply.
BWW Reviews: THE ALL-NEW ANITA GOODMAN EXPERIENCE: SEASON FINALE at the Jewel Box Theater
by Jay Irwin
- Jun 10, 2011
I love a good drag show. There, I've said it. When all the elements of good music, glitzy costumes and performers with well thought out characters and storylines hit the stage, you cannot ask for a better evening. This is why bad drag shows are all the more painful to me. Unfortunately my attendance at the Season Finale of "The All-New Anita Goodman Experience" fell more into the latter category.
BWW Reviews: THE ROCKY HORROR SHOW at Open Circle Theatre
by BWW

- Apr 16, 2011
Before the midnight movie showings, before the audience participation there was a little stage show from England called "The Rocky Horror Show" that tried to push social and sexual boundaries with its risque themes. Well, Open Circle Theatre is trying to bring that boundary pushing into a new millennium with their own production of the classic, albeit odd, musical. And while some of it comes across as a bit self serving and under produced, the production manages to take a new look at what an old show could do today.
