Emanuel Ax to Kick Off Three Concert Series with Music of Brahms & Premieres, 1/28

On Tuesday, January 28 at 8:00 p.m. in Stern Auditorium / Perelman Hall, pianist Emanuel Ax launches a three-concert retrospective focusing on the music of Brahms played alongside new works, all co-commissioned by Carnegie Hall. On the first program, mezzo-soprano Anne Sofie von Otter sings the New York premiere of Nico Muhly's So Many Things. Also on the program is Brahms's beloved song cycle, Zigeunerlieder, as well as selected lieder, and solo piano pieces by the composer.
The Quint Quintet to Play Madison Theatre, 12/8

On Sunday, December 8 at 3:00pm, renowned violinist Philippe Quint's Quint Quintet will perform 'A Night of Tango' at Molloy College's Madison Theatre (1000 Hempstead Ave.) The Quint Quintet was founded by the four-time Grammy Award Nominated violinist in 2009. The ensemble is dedicated to exploring the music of Astor Piazzolla and Argentine Tango. The quintet will include bandoneonist JP Jofre, double bassist Pedro Giraudo, electric guitarist Claudio Ragazzi, and pianist Octavio Brunetti. Russian tango dancers, Michael Nadtochi and Zoya Altmark will also appear.

Beginning with the 2013-14 season, the New York Philharmonic's Insights Series - in which artists and experts will explore some of the season's themes and concerts - will now be free, and take place at the David Rubenstein Atrium at Lincoln Center. This season's events will include discussions with Concertmaster Glenn Dicterow during his farewell season (TODAY, October 23); composer-conductor Esa-Pekka Salonen and violinist Leila Josefowicz (October 28), who will discuss Mr. Salonen's Violin Concerto, written for Ms. Josefowicz (which they will perform with the Philharmonic in its New York Concert Premiere, October 30-November 5); Music Director Alan Gilbert and Executive Director Matthew VanBesien on the state of the Philharmonic (March 3, 2014); The Mary and James G. Wallach Artist-in-Residence Yefim Bronfman (May 20, 2014), who will talk about Beethoven's piano concertos (which he will perform during The Beethoven Piano Concertos: A Philharmonic Festival, June 11-28, 2014); and discussions relating to the NY PHIL BIENNIAL, the details of which will be announced at a later date. All Insights Series events begin at 7:30 p.m.

Cellist Inbal Segev, known for her 'warm, pure and beautiful' tone (Strings Magazine), will perform with pianist Mirian Conti, violinist Benjamin Breen, and violist Dov Scheindlin in a Rush Hour chamber music concert presented by the Hudson Chamber Society (of which Breen is the Artistic Director) tonight, October 22 at 7:00pm at the Yamaha Piano Salon (689 Fifth Avenue, NYC). The program will include Mozart's Piano Quartet in G minor and a performance of Piazzolla's The Grand Tango for cello and piano by Segev and Conti.

The New York Philharmonic in collaboration with CAMI Music will celebrate the Chinese New Year for the third consecutive year, welcoming the Year of the Horse with a concert featuring major works of both the Chinese and Western canon on Saturday, February 1, 2014, at 7:30 p.m. The event celebrates the cultural heritage of China and America and honors the Chinese- American community. Long Yu — artistic director and chief conductor of the China Philharmonic, music director of the Shanghai and Guanzhou Symphony Orchestras, and artistic director of the Beijing Music Festival — will return to the Philharmonic to conduct the concert.
