K'Arts Balllet Presents The American Premiere Of SONG OF THE MERMAID

K'Arts Ballet of Korea will present the American premiere of Song of the Mermaid, a fantasy ballet choreographed by SunHee Kim, running October 20 and 21 at New York City Center. Song of the Mermaid, inspired by Hans Christian Andersen's beloved tale 'The Little Mermaid,' will star Kimin Kim, principal dancer of Mariinsky Ballet, and feature 40 dancers and an original score composed by Hana Ryou.

Born on October 11, 1918 in New York City, Robbins was one of the major forces in 20th century performing arts. He received world renown for his choreography for New York City Ballet, where he spent much of his creative life, as well as for his work with American Ballet Theatre, Ballets: U.S.A., and other dance companies around the world. He received equal acclaim for his work as a director and choreographer of Broadway musicals, plays, movies, and television, winning five Tony Awards and two Academy Awards, as well as numerous other honors including the Handel Medallion of the City of New York (1976), the Kennedy Center Honors (1981), and the National Medal of the Arts (1988).

The Washington Ballet opened their 2018.19 Season at the Kennedy Center Eisenhower Theatre last night to a full house of delighted fans and patrons. TWB Welcomes included acclaimed highlights from choreographer George Balanchine as well as iconic masterworks by Alexei Ratmansky and Marius Petipa. The company also played host to four internationally recognized stars of the dance world who shared the stage as special guest artist alongside TWB dancers.

Choreographer Justin Peck has joined the production team on the new film version of the Broadway musical "West Side Story," to be directed by Oscar-winning filmmaker Steven Spielberg. Peck is the Resident Choreographer and soloist dancer with the New York City Ballet and won a Tony Award in 2018 for his choreography in the Broadway revival of "Carousel." Oscar nominated screenwriter and Pulitzer Prize-winner Tony Kushner has written the adaptation of the 1957 musical originally written by Arthur Laurents and Stephen Sondheim with music by Leonard Bernstein, and concept, direction, and choreography by Jerome Robbins.

Velocity Dance Center and the gray are thrilled to announce the world premiere of The Midsummer, running Oct 19-21 at Velocity's Founder's Theater. The gray is a brand new dance company in Seattle, and for its inaugural piece, artistic director and choreographer Beth Terwilleger has curated a stellar artistic team that features dancers from Seattle gems Whim W'him, Evoke Productions, The Three Yells, and Coriolis Dance among others. A veritable feminist powerhouse, this female-choreographed experimental ballet work is also scored with original music by the critically acclaimed cellist and composer Julia Kent.
