The Colburn School continues its 2018-2019 season and celebrates the holidays with diverse performances that bring together today's greatest artists with extraordinary Colburn School faculty and students in programs on campus and throughout the community.

On Wednesday, November 7, 2018 Colburn School faculty members Martin Beaver, violin; Paul Coletti, viola; Clive Greensmith, cello and Fabio Bidini, piano, perform a Chamber Colburn Chamber Music Society series concert that includes Hungarian composer Dohnányi's Serenade for String Trio, the harmonically rich but lesser known Piano Trio by Rebecca Clarke, and Schumann's beloved Piano Quartet.

On Saturday, November 17, in Zipper Hall, the Colburn School dance students will bring scenes from the classic tale of The Nutcracker to life, as part of "A Nutcracker Prelude." Following the performance, guests of all ages can enjoy a magical Nutcracker Village and enjoy fun, family-friendly, holiday festivities. This special event benefits dance education at the Colburn School, and celebrates the The Music Center's production of George Balanchine's The Nutcracker by Miami City Ballet, taking place Nov. 30 - Dec. 2, and featuring student dancers from the Colburn School and The Gabriella Foundation's everybody dance! Program.

On Sunday December 9, Music Director and Conductor Yehuda Gilad brings the Colburn Orchestra to The Soraya with Conservatory of Music violinist Felicity James, in a program that includes Glazunov's Violin Concerto and Shostakovich's Symphony No. 5. Since her debut with the Seattle Symphony at the age of twelve, violinist Felicity James has appeared as soloist with many prominent orchestras of the Pacific Northwest, including the Seattle Philharmonic, the Spokane Symphony and the Seattle

Symphony. A dedicated chamber musician, James has performed in various ensembles all over the world, most recently at the Aspen, Sarasota, and Verbier Music Festivals, and in concerts by the Colburn Chamber Music and Los Angeles Da Camera Societies.

Colburn School's Gibson Dunn Rush Hour series of free concerts continues on Thursday, November 29 with faculty host Ian Pritchard and The Colburn Baroque Ensemble in a performance that will explore instrumental music from seventeenth-century Austria. Contemporary theorists described this music as the "fantastic style:" music filled with strange turns, experimental effects, harmonic extravagance, and sheer virtuosity. The program features works by Biber, Muffat, and Schmelzer, including Biber's famous "Battaglia."

On Friday, November 30, world-renowned pianist and Colburn School's Artist-in-Residence Jean-Yves Thibaudet joins acclaimed cellist Gautier Capuçon to teach a joint master class for sonata duos.

On Sunday, December 2, the Colburn Youth Orchestra performs on the Sundays Live at LACMA series. Begun in 1948, Sundays Live is the longest running live music broadcast in Los Angeles. Fifty Sundays of the year, professional and emerging musicians perform for one hour on the stage of the Leo S. Bing Theater at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. These free programs are streamed live at lacma.org and heard through the week as a podcast on kusc.org. The Community School of Performing Arts has participated regularly in this concert series for decades.
