Walking down Queen Street, the main shopping boulevard in beautiful Niagara-on-the Lake, during the third week of July, was like being in downtown Cleveland. Cav championship t-shirts and Indian's garb were worn by many of the strollers. Our Toronto friends shared that in almost every play they attended, their neighbors on one or both sides of their seats were from the Cleveland area.

A family mourns the recent death of their beloved sister/daughter/wife/mother (and famous actress), Kathy.  This melancholy premise is a fitting frame for self-involved character reflections, but not for dramatic energy-especially because the manner of Kathy's death is totally unrelated to the characters's lives.

The Canadian winds are whipping across Lake Erie! Yes, the snow is on the ground, the weather is miserable, but soon the cold winds will subside and many Clevelanders will start their trek to the land of the maple leaf and cross one of the many bridges in their treks north to Canada for wonderful theater.

MY FAIR LADY is a classic musical, and a perfect opening show for The Muny's 97th season. Even the threat of rain couldn't dampen the high spirits of this show, and in most unlikely fashion, the skies cleared and provided us with a terrific evening of song, dance, and romance. Based on G.B. Shaw's superb play Pygmalion, whose basic story has been reworked for all manner of media, there's no denying how well the concept still holds up. The incredibly memorable score (book & lyrics Alan Jay Lerner, music by Frederick Lowe), in combination with a marvelous cast, makes for a full evening of wit and charm. The Muny's production is truly an elegant must-see presentation!

Theatre J's production of 'The Intelligent Homosexual's Guide to Capitalism and Socialism with a Key to the Scriptures' comes complete with quirks and brainy asides that can leave audiences miles behind, grasping for meaning. This being an epic affair, eventually we simply give up and let the characters live their lives, untouched and untouchable. But that's when the magic starts.

When I first saw the film of Educating Rita in the early 80s I was captivated by Julie Walters. It made the Brit actress an international star. Now at Theatre 40 Willy Russell's play Educating Rita receives a handsome staging with another captivating beauty Murielle Zuker. It's a two-character play co-starring Adrian Neil and directed by Robert Mackenzie through June 23.

The Washington Stage Guild completes its Season of Dreams with the area premiere of Simon Bent's ELLING, a whimsical comedy of the power of friendship when everyday life is an adventure. Bent's London hit is based on a quartet of novels by the Norwegian writer Ingvar Ambjornsen that was the source of an Oscar-nominated film in 2002. ELLING is the story of a pair of misfits who, after rooming together for years in an institution, are offered an independent life - if they can cope with it. Elling and Kjell Bjarne must learn to deal with the world and each other's fears and quirks, and Elling's discovery of literary ambition becomes a path to a 'normal' life. Along the way the two have a series of offbeat adventures as they struggle with bureaucracy, relationships, and their own demons.

Connecticut Repertory Theatre (CRT) will present Legally Blonde the Musical onstage at the Harriet S. Jorgensen Theater today, April 24-May 4. The 2007 winner of London's Olivier Award for Best Musical, stars Courtney Hammond as the intelligent, self-assured and fashion conscious Elle Woods.
