Casting has been announced for Cameron Mackintosh's spectacular new production of Andrew Lloyd Webber's THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA for the triumphant return Atlanta engagement at the Fox Theatre February 22 - March 5 as a Fifth Third Bank Broadway in Atlanta 2016/2017 season special.

After a record-breaking twenty-eight years on Broadway (and nearly the same timespan on the road), THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA is an international sensation that's been seen by virtually everyone. In fact, nearly 150 million people have sat in the audience for a performance and listened to the Andrew Lloyd Webber score in more than 15 languages! Up until the 2004 feature film, each of these performances followed the blueprint created by director Harold Prince and CATS choreographer Gillian Lynn, first staging it in London where it currently celebrates its 30th year of success. But, in 2012, producer Cameron Mackintosh recruited West End director Laurence Connor to helm a sparkling new production, later inspiring a new US tour that has just returned to Bass Hall in its second DFW-area appearance. And while 'Phans' of the original production might miss a few iconic elements, the new tour offers an exciting opportunity to experience the show through a new pair of opera glasses.

Desert Theatreworks (DTW), Palm Desert's 501(c)(3) community theatre, is presenting Will Eno's esoteric play, THE REALISTIC JONESES. This top-notch production is a must-see for theatergoers interested in well-acted, absorbing, unsettling plays. However, the meaning of the play is difficult to discern.

The producers of AN AMERICAN IN PARIS, the most awarded new musical of 2015 and winner of four Tony Awards, have announced the full cast for the upcoming national tour. This weekend I visited a little gem filled with history, tucked away within a short drive from Charlotte, the Meroney Theater in Salisbury, NC. The original home to vaudeville and now home to The Piedmont Players. This group put on a sublimely wonderful production of CABARET. The cast was lead by Emily Ramirez, who played the promiscuously innocent, Sally Bowles. I couldn't take my eyes off Ramirez. She captured the character of Bowles' sexual persona onstage with charged dancing and emotionally connected vocals.

Piedmont Players Theatre (PPT) has announced its 2016 Youth Theatre Summer Camp season. Camps run from June 13 - Aug 12, 2016.

Desert Theatreworks's new version of A CHRISTMAS CAROL is touching and funny. Director Lance Phillips-Martinez adapted the Charles Dickens novella by using Dickens' words for narration and dialog. He also selected period Christmas carols, sung primarily by the chorus,The clever staging, the use of a combination musical chorus and Greek chorus (the latter narrates early parts of the story), the costumes, the make-up, the imaginative sound and lighting, the elements of humor, and, of course, the acting all contribute to the success of this top-notch production.

Desert Theatreworks has mounted a splendid production of William Gibson's THE MIRACLE WORKER, directed by Daniela Ryan. The cast turns in performances befitting a professional production.

The McCallum Theatre Institute, the Education Division of the McCallum Theatre, has announced the winners of the 14th Annual Open Call Talent Competition held on Thursday, April 26th - Saturday, April 28th. This year's twenty-two finalists were selected from one hundred eighty-one submissions. The cast of eighty-nine local artists were provided the opportunity to work with and receive guidance from a professional artistic and production team and perform on the McCallum Theatre stage in four performances for over 4,000 audience members.
