Jubilee Theatre continues its celebration of the African-American experience with its 2008-2009 season and a new musical conceived by Jubilee Artistic Director Ed Smith. The Gospel Queen, featuring Sheran Goodspeed Keyton, focuses on the life of one of gospel music's greatest sensations, Mahalia Jackson.

The Pittsburgh International Children's Festival, a division of The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust, will present the 23rd annual festival May 13-17, 2009, in various venues throughout the city's university district of Oakland. The Festival is currently one of only four international theater festivals for children in the United States.
Featured Children's Festival performance sites include Charity Randall Theatre, Studio Theatre, Bellefield Hall Auditorium, Synod Hall and Carnegie Lecture Hall. The Festival grounds, free to the public, will complement the featured performances with hands-on cultural and educational activities, roving artists, booths, and exhibitors. The Target Community Stage returns this year as the center of outdoor Festival activities. The stage features a lively mix of professional artists and regional performance groups.

Jubilee Theatre continues its celebration of African-American culture with its 2008-2009 season and August Wilson's The Piano Lesson. An American icon, August Wilson depicted the human condition like no other playwright of his time. The Piano Lesson, the fourth in a cycle of ten plays chronicling the African-American experience throughout the 20th century, won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama and the Drama Desk Award for Outstanding New Play in 1990.
National Black Theatre Festival Honors Jubilee Theatre Artistic Director Ed Smith 8/3

This year, the prestigious National Black Theatre Festival? will honor Jubilee Theatre Artistic Director Ed Smith with the festival's first annual Lloyd Richards' Director's Award. Smith is receiving this award because of his significant contributions to black theatre and American theatre in general. The festival will be held from August 3 through 8, 2009 in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. The theme for this year's festival remains the same as the past ten festivals: An International Celebration and Reunion of Spirit. Mr. Smith will be presented with the award at the Opening Night Gala Awards Banquet, which will be held on Monday, August 3.
