YoungArts Kicks Off Miami Art Week with Opening Festivities

Last night, on Tuesday, November 29th, the National YoungArts Foundation (YoungArts) kicked off its Miami Art Week programming with the debut of two visual arts exhibitions: When We Were Young, which features rarely seen contemporary masterworks from the JPMorgan Chase Art Collection paired with newly created works by YoungArts Visual Arts alumni; and Roots, an immersive, site-specific installation of new work by Cuban-American artist Jose Parla.

In celebration of The Metropolitan Museum of Art's exhibition Jerusalem 1000-1400: Every People Under Heaven, Schola Antiqua of Chicago will perform a program of sacred music that is inspired by the diverse religions existing within the city of Jerusalem. On Sunday, October 23, at 1:00 and 3:00 pm, The Suspended Harp: Sounds of Faith in Medieval Jerusalem will be staged in the Fuentidueña Chapel at The Met Cloisters, as part of the 2016-17 MetLiveArts season.

The Arts Company presents two exhibitions in November --- New Work: Paintings and Drawings by Denise Stewart-Sanabria; and Musical Sculpture by Philippe Guillerm. Both artists create works that celebrate the energy of Nashville's fascination for food and music. Tennessee-based Stewart-Sanabria is returning with a new series of large-scale oil-on-canvas paintings of food in a photorealistic style.
Institute For Contemporary Art At Virginia Commonwealth University To Appoint Stephanie Smith As Chief Curator

The Institute for Contemporary Art (ICA) at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) today announced the appointment of Stephanie Smith as its Chief Curator. The new, non-collecting contemporary art institution will open in Richmond in fall 2017. The Chief Curator is a new position in which Smith will manage the expanding curatorial team and work closely with ICA Director Lisa Freiman and the Curator of Education, Johanna Plummer, to realize and demonstrate the ICA's artistic vision. Smith is currently the Chief Curator of the Art Gallery of Ontario, Toronto, and will assume her position at the ICA this November.

It makes sense that Strawberry Theater Workshop would put on a production of Eugene Ionesco's 'Rhinoceros' right now. Ionesco's allegorical post-WWII production was far from ambiguous when it came to political stance. Directed by Jess K. Smith, this modern adaptation both soared and, at times stumbled from its approach to cultural relevancy.
