Leonard Bernstein's CANDIDE has had more lives than that proverbial cat--the latest being New York City Opera's new take on it, opening on January 6 for a ten-performance run at Jazz at Lincoln Center's Rose Theatre. It is, once again, helmed by director Hal Prince and choreographer Pat Birch, who were responsible--with librettist Hugh Wheeler and conductor John Mauceri--for the resuscitation and renovation of the once-considered unproducible work, more than 40 years ago.
Texas State University Dance Team's 'Strutters' to Perform at Trump's Inauguration Despite Criticism

The Texas State University's all-female dance team, The Strutters, have had controversy and criticism over their history, including integration, weight restrictions, cardio conditioning and strength requirements, restrictions on body piercings and more. The team defends itself by reminding others that the being part of the organization is elective, not mandatory, and that the rules are in place to insure a level playing field for everyone, and designed to bring out an individual's qualities within the constructs of a team. As ambassadors of Texas State University, the state of Texas, and the USA, team members gladly adhere to the rules set forth by the organization.

Unless you've been living under a rock, you know that the The Rockettes are performing for President-elect Donald Trump's inauguration on January 20th. Madison Square Garden executive chairman James Dolan called an impromptu meeting with the Rockettes on December 27th to discuss - in a 'safe setting' - the controversy surrounding MSG's decision to have the dancers perform at the event. Marie Claire published Dolan's and several Rockettes' statements from the meeting in a new piece this morning. Now, Madison Square Garden Company has released a statement regarding Marie Claire's coverage of the private meeting.

Early on the morning of November 19, Donald Trump took to Twitter (as he has a tendency to do) to make the assertion that "The Theater must always be a safe and special place."
On December 19, one month to the day after Trump's Broadway-fueled Twitter deluge, Liz Meriwether and Shira Milikowsky put on A SAFE AND SPECIAL PLACE, an evening of works written and performed by some of the theater's best and most promising talents. The event, held within the atmospheric walls of the McKittrick Hotel and which benefited The Trevor Project and Kids in Need of Defense was, as you could guess, anything but what Trump would deem "safe and special."
