American violist Matthew Lipman, recipient of a 2015 Avery Fischer Career Grant, makes his Cedille label debut with 'Ascent,' an album featuring, in the artist's words, 'music enraptured by flights of fantasy,' including world-premiere recordings of Dmitri Shostakovich's recently discovered Impromptu for Viola and Piano, Op. 33, and Clarice Assad's 'Metamorfose,' which Lipman commissioned.

The Danish String Quartet, lauded by critics, presenters, and audiences internationally for their unparalleled musical mastery and allure, has today received their first Grammy Award nomination, for their latest recording, PRISM I.  This is the first in a series of five albums in which the DSQ present one of Beethoven's late string quartets in the context of a related fugue by J.S. Bach as well as a linked masterwork from the modern quartet literature.  Prism I comprises the first of Beethoven's late quartets, his grandly life-affirming Op. 127 in E-flat Major, alongside Bach's luminous fugue in the same key (arranged by Mozart) and Dmitri Shostakovich's final string quartet, No. 15 in E-flat minor, a haunted and haunting sequence of six adagios.

Music Director Rossen Milanov and the Columbus Symphony begin 2019 with a performance of Shostakovich's iconic Leningrad Symphony inspired by Nazi Germany's siege of the city during World War II. One of the composer's most power compositions, this work conveys tragedy, oppression, resistance, and ultimately, victory. The performance will be accompanied by excerpts of the 1997 documentary about Soviet composer Dmitri Shostakovich titled The War Symphonies: Shostakovich Against Stalin.
