Deaf West Theatre's Launches Kickstarter Campaign For SPRING AWAKENING

Deaf West Theatre and The Forest of Arden in Los Angeles have reimagined the Tony Award-winning musical Spring Awakening in a whole new way and are seeking backers for their Kickstarter campaign to make it happen.

World Premiere of LADYBIRD Set for 24th ST. Theatre, 12/7-15

What are the things that we carry? What are the things that we love that make us who we are? 24th STreet Theatre's Teatro del Pueblo ('Theater of the Village') presents the world premiere of a warm, funny and unique holiday play about love and sacrifice, created from stories shared by members of the local community during workshops with professional theater artists. Written by Laurie Woolery and Victor Vazquez, directed by Woolery, and supported by The James Irvine Foundation Exploring Engagement Fund, 'Ladybird' gets four performances Dec. 7 through Dec. 15 at 24th STreet Theatre in downtown Los Angeles. All performances are in Spanish with English supertitles, and admission is only 24 cents.

The 24th Annual LA Stage Alliance Ovation Awards, celebrating theatrical excellence and achievement during the 2013 season, were presented on Sunday, November 3 at the San Gabriel Mission Playhouse Thirty-five awards were bestowed upon 13 different Southern California theatre companies. Leading the pack with 12 was Center Theatre Group (seven for The Nether at the Kirk Douglas Theatre; three for Joe Turner's Come and Gone at the Mark Taper Forum; one for The Scottsboro Boys at the Ahmanson Theatre; and one for The Royale at the Kirk Douglas Theatre). CTG was followed by 3-D Theatricals with five awards (four for Parade and one for Shrek the Musical). The Chance Theater and La Mirada Theatre for the Performing Arts took home three awards each (including Best Season for La Mirada); Circle X Theatre Company, the Fountain Theatre, and the Odyssey Theatre Ensemble tied with two each. Arden also joined Barbra Streisand during her world concert tour and appeared in the City Center Encores! staging of Juno.

Katie Rubin to Debut WHY I DIED, A COMEDY! at Hudson Theatre Mainstage, Begin. 10/18

Actor, writer, and comedienne Katie Rubin will bring her new solo show, Why I Died, a Comedy! to the Hudson Theatre Mainstage for six weeks only, it was announced today by producer Laura Hill. Directed by Victor Bumbalo, Why I Died, a Comedy! begins previews on October 18 and opening is set for Saturday, October 26 at 8pm. The limited engagement will run through November 23 only.

The powerful tale of Huckleberry Finn is vividly brought to life for both the hearing and deaf communities when the Pennington Players present "Big River," Roger Miller and William Hauptman's Tony Award-winning musical adaptation of Mark Twain's 1884 novel, Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. Performances are Fridays, Oct. 4 and 11 at 8 p.m.; Saturdays, Oct. 5 and 12 at 8 p.m.; and Sundays, Oct. 6 and 13 at 2 p.m. Kelsey Theatre is located on the college's West Windsor campus, 1200 Old Trenton Road. A reception with the cast and crew follows the opening night performance on Oct. 4.

According to the theatre's official Facebook page, Spring Awakening veteran Andy Mientus and Broadway favorite Michael Arden are collaborating on a workshop of Spring Awakening featuring deaf actors at LA's Deaf West Theatre. The project features choreography by Spencer Liff, and will be presented in a showcase on July 19.
