Based on American writer Ambrose Bierce's short story, The Difficulty of Crossing a Field is a tale about a farmer in pre-Civil War Alabama who takes a walk across his field in full view of his family, neighbors, and slaves, then suddenly vanishes from sight. Lang and Obie Award-winning playwright Mac Wellman explore the implications of unresolved disappearances and human perception. Hauntingly powerful, the work mixes arias with spoken text and emotional melodies with intense drama, all intimately accompanied by a lone string quartet.

The Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra's pioneering Liquid Music series announces today the full schedule of events for its 2014-15 season. Liquid Music, which begins its third season this fall, expands the world of classical music through innovative new projects, boundary-defying artists, and unique presentation formats. Bernard Haitink will return to the New York Philharmonic to conduct two weeks of performances highlighting works by Austrian composers - Berg, Webern, and Mahler - and Beethoven, who spent much of his career in Austria. The schedule for this summer's Lincoln Center Out of Doors festival, which runs from July 20 to August 10, was announced today by Bill Bragin, Lincoln Center's Director of Public Programming. Nearly 100 free performances will take place across the plazas of Lincoln Center during three weeks. A special Memorial Concert for Pete and Toshi Seeger on July 20 will be followed by the official opening concert on July 23 with Larry Harlow's Hommy: A Latin Opera, the landmark work's first performance in 40 years. The New York Philharmonic and American Composers Orchestra (ACO), in collaboration with ACO's EarShot: the National Orchestra Composition Discovery Network, announce the selection of 13 emerging composers from an international pool of more than 400 applicants from seven countries and 37 states ranging in age from 9 to 84, whose original scores for orchestra have been chosen for readings and performances by the Philharmonic and ACO as part of the inaugural NY PHIL BIENNIAL.

Carnegie Hall today announced that soprano Jennifer Zetlan has agreed to step in for Kiera Duffy on Sunday, April 27 at 6:00 p.m., performing the U.S. premiere of composer Richard Ayres's No. 42 In the Alps with contemporary music group Alarm Will Sound at Carnegie Hall's Zankel Hall. Ms. Duffy is unable to appear due to illness.

Columbia University's Italian Academy for Advanced Studies presents the adventurous young cellist Jay Campbell, First Prize Winner of the 2012 Concert Artists Guild (CAG) Victor Elmaleh Competition, on its Spring 2014 concert series Wednesday evening, May 7th at 7:00 p.m. in the Teatro of the Italian Academy, 1161 Amsterdam Ave., New York, NY. Now in its 11th year at Carnegie Hall's Zankel Hall, Orchestra Underground continues as ACO's subversive and entrepreneurial redefinition of the orchestra as an elastic ensemble, and this year features the rarely performed orchestral music of pioneering composer and performer Meredith Monk, holder of the 2014-2015 Richard and Barbara Debs Composer's Chair at Carnegie Hall (Monk's Sphere, November 21). Orchestra Underground brings cabaret, pop, and jazz traditions into the concert hall in a program featuring Kurt Weill's cabaret cult classic The Seven Deadly Sins sung by Shara Worden (Sin & Songs, February 27).
