Schimmel Center presents NYTB's UPTOWN/DOWNTOWN/DANCE

The Uptown/Downtown/Dance program will include an as-yet-untitled World Premiere from Martin Lawrance and the World Premiere of Painted Within by Zhong-Jing Fang, as well as a restaging of former NYTB resident choreographer Edward Henkel's ReVision, created in 1986, with music by Edvard Grieg, Holberg Suite op. 40 (1884). A 2013 NYTB commission, Short Memory by Pam Tanowitz, is set to live music by Lou Harrison and Henry Cowell and helps set up Ms. Tanowitz's brilliant use of stage space. The evenings include two more pieces by Ms. Tanowtiz: Light Moving, set to music by David Lang, and Double Andante, a 13-minute ballet for ten dancers set to the Andante movement of Beethoven's Sonata in D Major #15, which will be played live on piano two times at different tempos. Like You Like It RADcording cast members Nick Cearley ('The Skivvies,' Pageant), and Lesli Margherita (Matilda) will appear at The Drama Book Shop along with authors Daniel S. Acquisto and Sammy Buck for a book & CD signing celebrating Shakespeare's birthday. Friday, April 21st, 5:00pm event is free to the public. Copies of the script, published by Playscripts, Inc., and the CD, from Broadway Records, will be available for purchase.

From Indonesia's most celebrated director, Garin Nugroho, comes Satan Jawa, a newly commissioned silent feature film steeped in Javanese mythology with a live score by Australia's Iain Grandage and Indonesia's Rahayu Supanggah featuring a thrilling blend of Western symphonic tradition and Indonesian gamelan music. Satan Jawa will be a feature of Asia TOPA and will be performed at Arts Centre Melbourne's Hamer Hall on 24 February 2017.

Shakespeare Dallas Receives $35,000 Grant from The Arts Community Alliance

Shakespeare Dallas has been awarded a $35,000 grant by The Arts Community Alliance (TACA), Dallas' premier umbrella arts organization providing financial support, stewardship and resources to area arts groups. In a record fundraising year, TACA announced at its annual Grant Awards Presentation on Jan. 9 that it has allocated $1.5 million in grants to diverse and deserving North Texas performing arts organizations in 2017.

For many, the fate of the arts remains a concern of those confined to what conservatives label a 'coastal bubble.' A fringe frivolity to be cast aside in favor of funding more 'practical' ventures.
