SIDE SHOW & More Set for Kennedy Center's 2013-14 Season

The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts today announced its 2013-2014 theater season. Reaching hundreds of thousands of audience members annually, the theater season features a new Kennedy Center re-imagining of Henry Krieger and Bill Russell's Side Show, in association with La Jolla Playhouse with revisions by Krieger and Russell and direction by Academy Award winning director Bill Condon; touring productions of Sister Act, Elf, Flashdance – The Musical, Peter and the Starcatcher, An Evening with Patti LuPone and Mandy Patinkin, and Disney's The Lion King; and an international theater festival highlighting renowned companies from around the world. The season will also bring the seventh season of Barbara Cook's Spotlight series, individually showcasing five Broadway performers in a cabaret setting. Committed to arts education, creation of new works, and community and national involvement, the Center also hosts the 12th annual Page-to-Stage new play festival and the 46th annual Kennedy Center American College Theater Festival.

Beginning Friday, The Duplex welcomes Carly Sakolove in an open-ended engagement of her one-woman show, I HEAR VOICES. In addition to Carly, a surprise guest "Diva" will be performing to celebrate the opening. As of February 22, audiences can enjoy Sakolove's critically acclaimed "Broadway Diva" impressions on the last Friday of each month. The show, written by Sakolove and Tony Award nominee Bill Russell has previously played sold-out engagements at The Duplex and Joe's Pub.

La Jolla Playhouse announces a fifth production for its 2013/14 season: the world premiere of The Tallest Tree, a new play with music written and performed by Daniel Beaty (Emergency, Through the Night), directed by Moises Kaufman (I Am My Own Wife, The Laramie Project). A co-production with Kansas City Repertory Theatre, The Tallest Tree will run in the Playhouse's Sheila and Hughes Potiker Theatre October 9 - November 3, 2013. The piece is produced in association with Tectonic Theater Project.

Kareem Abdul-Jabbar took home two 2013 NAACP Image Awards for 'Best Documentary' for his film 'On the Shoulders of Giants - The Story of the Greatest Team You've Never Heard Of' and the award for 'Best Children's Book' for 'What Color is My World? - the lost history of African American inventors' authored by the legendary sports figure and Raymond Obstfeld. The film was nominated in the Best Documentary category and the book was nominated for Best Literary Work - Children's category. Both were awarded last night, February 1, in a pre-show gala awards ceremony held in Los Angeles.

On Sunday January 27 singer/TV executive producer Joe Lupariello brought his musical show Where or When to Sterling's Upstairs at the Federal. Lupariello has had a background in musical comedy, but chose a mix of contemporary and traditional pop standards for Where or When, some of which worked better than others. Backed by great versatile Brian Graden at the piano, Lupariello worked like a charm with his SRO crowd, bringing the set in at under 60 minutes.

Re-Imagined SIDE SHOW Opens at La Jolla Playhouse, Tonight

The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts will produce, in association with La Jolla Playhouse, a re-imagining of Henry Krieger and Bill Russell's Side Show. Directed by Academy Award winning director Bill Condon, the musical will play at La Jolla Playhouse November 5 through December 17 and will play the Kennedy Center Eisenhower Theater in spring 2014, according to an equity casting notice. The musical features book and lyrics by Bill Russell and music by Henry Krieger who will revise the show before its debut at La Jolla.

La Jolla's Re-Imagined SIDE SHOW to Include New Characters

According to an Equity casting notice, the revised version of the show will include some new characters- 'Auntie/Loretta' and 'Sir/Todd Browning.' While the latter seems to be a similar to 'The Boss,' who sang the opening song in the original production, the other is described as 'the woman who saved the twins from abandonment but began to display them as curiosities for money.' Additional new characters will include a Texas lawyer named 'Martin Arnold,' and a vaudeville performer named 'Ray.'
