Tap Dancer, Bill “Bojangles” Robinson Re-releases Biography
by Christina Mancuso
- Feb 4, 2014
Bill Robinson - 'Mr. Bojangles' - is a name synonymous with tap dancing. He invented the 'stair dance,' starred in movies and on Broadway, broke the color barrier for dancers in vaudeville and performed for kings and presidents. His career in American dance was unprecedented. Even today, those unfamiliar with his work know his name from the song 'Mr. Bojangles' and Fred Astaire's classic dance routine 'Bojangles of Harlem.' And if you've ever used the word 'copasetic', you can thank Robinson - he coined it.
BWW Reviews: SAVION GLOVER'S STEPZ at the Brooklyn Center for the Performing Arts at Brooklyn College Looks to the Past for the Future of Tap
by Frances Steiner
- Nov 4, 2013
Brooklyn Center for the Performing Arts at Brooklyn College started off its 2013-2014 season with the bang of Savion Glover's tap shoes. The venue hosted a performance of Savion Glover's STePz on November 2nd. In the program, Glover listed himself simply as "hoofer, father, husband." Nevertheless, it is undeniable that Glover is a living icon. Glover first appeared on Broadway at the age of 12 in The Tap Dance Kid. By his early 20s, Glover was nominated for a Tony Award for his choreography Bring in 'da Noise, Bring in 'da Funk. Many millenials grew up watching Glover as a featured performer on Sesame Street and today's children see him as the man behind the tap-dancing penguin in Happy Feet.
Barbara Cook At Long Last Gives The Gift Of Her Music To Las Vegas
by Ellen Sterling
- Aug 17, 2012
I first fell in love with Barbara Cook when I was a small child and was taken to see Plain and Fancy. What I remember to this day from that show is Barbara Cook coming onstage in a turquoise Lincoln Continental. The car had a black leather interior and she was dressed to match - turquoise sheath dress with black shoes, belt and hat. It was my ideal picture of what being a grown-up woman should be like (still is). Even though, I saw her many times after that and realized what a beautiful voice she possesses, that picture of her has never left my mind.
