Ashbery to be Honored at Brooklyn Book Festival, 9/11

On Sunday, September 12, Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz, the Brooklyn Literary Council and Brooklyn Tourism will host the fifth annual Brooklyn Book Festival. Each year, the Brooklyn Book Festival 'BoBi' award is given to an author who has made a broad impact on the field of literature. This year's recipient is John Ashbery, who will be honored at the Brooklyn Book Festival Gala Mingle on Saturday, September 11, 2010. The award was established in the Festival's second year. Previous BoBi recipients are Edwidge Danticat (2009), Walter Mosley (2008) and Paul Auster (2007). Ashbery will also participate in this year's Festival program, in an on-stage conversation with Paul Auster, Sunday, September 12.

Great Evenings in the Great Hall, The Cooper Union?s dynamic performance series celebrating the college?s 150th anniversary, continues this fall with appearances by Salman Rushdie, Tony Kushner, Adam Gopnik, Olympia Dukakis, Amy Goodman, Siri Hustvedt, Isaiah Sheffer, Maria Tucci, and Karen Finley. From September through January 2010, in six provocative and entertaining presentations, The Cooper Union will showcase the stirring words of the radicals and reformers who spurred change and propelled advancements in civil rights, the labor movement, education and the arts for the past century-and-a-half. Period music and historic artifacts will complement the fiery oratory and inspiring dialogue that have filled The Great Hall since 1859.

Following rave reviews Too Much Memory, written by Keith Reddin and Meg Gibson, and directed by Ms. Gibson, has sold out its run through its closing on Monday, December 22, at the Fourth Street Theatre, 83 East 4th Street. The Rising Phoenix Repertory and Piece by Piece production opened Tuesday, December 9, to rave reviews as part of New York Theatre Workshop's Jonathan Larson Lab. All performances are sold out. Those wishing to be put on a waiting should arrive at the theatre 45 minutes prior to curtain.
