I don’t think I’ve ever left an event feeling quite so inspired to work on my writing and wanting to work on new work. This festival was truly inspiring and I left having learned so much from all of these wonderful people.

The production team have brought together a creative collaboration that well- celebrates a much loved story. Director Stephanie Green, Musical Director Terry Gentle and Choreographer Nikoia McKelvie have been thorough in their work and come together to present something very special to the local community. Very special indeed.

The limited run begins tonight, April 16, at The Onyx in Commercial Center and plays through May 2. Essential Theatre has just announced Theroun Patterson and Karla Jennings as co-winners of the 2014 Playwriting Competition. 'It's taken us a long while to come to a decision this year,' observes Peter Hardy, Founding Artistic Director of the theatre, 'because of the large number of strong submissions we received. But we feel that both of these plays are worthy of the prizes and will be excellent contributions to our Festival this summer.' Both playwrights will receive a $600 cash prize and a full production in this summer's Essential Theatre Festival.

The award-winning playwrighting duo Larry Larson and Eddie Levi Lee return to Horizon Theatre with the world premiere of their new play The Waffle Palace: Smothered, Covered and Scattered 24/7/365. Inspired by real life news stories about Waffle House restaurants, the play follows a Midtown diner owner, his staff, and a hilarious cast of customers as they battle to keep The Waffle Palace open against encroaching real estate developers. The Waffle Palace runs tonight May 11 through June 24, 2012.
