Edward Matthew Walter BIO

Originally from New York, Matthew has been working as an independent theatre designer or teaching since 2004. He is currently based in Kansas City, MO.


Before then, he had a 15 year career in architecture and was involved with several award-winning projects and formulated his design process of working in a collaborative environment.
For seven years, in Chicago, he worked as a designer or technician with various theatres including Mortar Theatre Company, Timeline, FilmAcres Productions, and Piccolo Theatre in Evanston.
Premiere productions include The Brother (by John Hancock at the Theatre Bldg) which was published by Samuel French, Mother Bear (by Jayme McGhan for Mortar Theatre Company) and 14 (by John Cameron for the University of Iowa).
Regional credits includes New York (18, Top Ten); Iowa Summer Rep (Rabbit Hole, Lend Me a Tenor, Post Mortem, Sylvia, Travesties); Riverside Theatre, Iowa City (Fuddy Meers and The Goat); Cornell College (The Long Christmas Ride Home, Les Liaisons Dangereuses, In the Next Room).
Matthew has taught design courses at the College of Charleston, Cornell College, Coe College, and Westwood College.
He was the Resident Scenic Design Assistant at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival for two seasons and worked most recently as assistant designer for William Bloodgood (The Madness of George III, Chicago Shakespeare Theatre).
In 2004 he designed a new 100-seat black box theatre for Artists Collaborative Theatre in Elkhorn City, Kentucky and became the Resident Scenic Designer when it opened officially in 2009.

BWW Review: CRIMES OF THE HEART Continues at the Kansas City Actors Theatre


Crimes of the Heart the Kansas City Actors Theatre production of the tragic comedy classic continues at the Polsky Theatre in the Carlsen Center at the Johnson County Community College. Darren Sextro directs Crimes of the Heart written by Beth Henley. Edward Matthew Walter designs the realistic set and Georgianna Londre Buchanan provides costume design.

Rose Theater to Present NARNIA, 12/6-29


A beautiful tale of adventure, sacrifice and redemption lies just beyond the wardrobe doors in The Rose Theater's production of Narnia, playing Dec. 6-29, 2013. The musical version of C.S. Lewis' classic children's novel, as interpreted by playwright Jules Tasca, lyricist Ted Drachman and composer Thomas Tierney, explores the epic battle between good and evil with memorable characters, spectacular settings and daring adventures.
