Woman in Motion presents Find Your Way, an evening of dance filled with passion, individuality, and collaborations between female-identifying artists. The shows will take place on Saturday, July 8th and Sunday, July 9th at 7PM at The Citigroup Theater at the Ailey Studios.

When professional dancers are interviewed in magazines or documentaries they are consistently asked the question, 'How did you get your first job?' Aspiring dancers are always eager to know the tricks of the trade and any tips that could help them reach the top. But to my dismay the single response I hear over and over again is, 'I was in the right place at the right time.' I have continually found this to be an enormously frustrating and unhelpful response. Therefore, I've decided to share the tips and tricks I learned and utilized during my two years as a Trainee with American Repertory Ballet and Princeton Ballet School, and a few of the invaluable qualities that Artistic Directors may look for in a dancer.

In today's modern world people often complain, "Chivalry is dead! Manners are gone! Where are the social graces of the past?" I'll tell you where they are: a ballet studio. While the outside world has left behind many of these "outdated" social graces, they are what keep a ballet studio focused, polite and structured. It can sometimes be daunting to be a new ballet student, and feeling like you're out of the loop, but maybe this blog will help you "crack the code" of ballet class etiquette.

Every January, dance publications print their monthly issues with their covers screaming 'Auditions Pointers!', and while these tips are often helpful, I have found that year after year, they are always the same. There are only so many times that you can print, 'wear a bright colored leo, stand at the front, smile and nod to show your understanding of the combination', until inevitably every other girl in the class is also following those pointers and you don't end up standing out AT ALL. This is what I found to be true when I was auditioning for summer intensives and companies. However, an audition for an SI and an audition for a company are two entirely different experiences, so I'll try to point out when a tip works for both, or only works for one.

American Repertory Ballet Artistic Director Douglas Martin is please to announce its 2013-2014 Company Dancers, including the addition of Company Dancer Nanako Yamamoto and the promotion of dancers Andrea D'Annunzio and Mattia Pallozzi from Trainee to full Company Dancer. Yamamoto, D'Annunzio, and Pallozzi will join returning dancers: Cameron Auble-Branigan, Euphrosyne Avery, Stephen Campanella, Alice Cao, Alexander Dutko, Shaye Firer, Monica Giragosian, Samantha Gullace, Joshua Kurtzberg, Karen Leslie Moscato, Marc St-Pierre, Edward Urwin, and Claire van Bever. The 2013-2014 Season will be Auble-Branigan's and Firer's second season with ARB. It will be the third season for Avery, Cao, Giragosian, and van Bever. Campanella, Gullace, Moscato, St-Pierre, and Urwin are entering their fourth season, Dutko his fifth, and Kurtzberg is entering his sixth season with ARB.

As a dancer in a repertory company, you are asked to learn and perform many different pieces over the course of a season. It's a huge change from being a student, where there might only be two or three opportunities for performance a year. Naturally, the process is drastically different. Instead of rehearsing the same material non-stop for a month or two before the show, you might have 3 weeks to prepare several pieces for a performance, while also preparing for a performance with different repertory two weeks after that. Sometimes, my brain gets quite crowded with choreography! But, it's part of the job.

When I found out that I would be joining American Repertory Ballet, the first thing my parents said to me, after 'Congratulations!', was, 'Oh, thank goodness, we won't have to pay for your pointe shoes anymore!' And you can't really blame them! At $60-100 a pair, pointe shoes are like a nice pair of heels that you throw out after a week or two. But, to a ballerina, they are the lifeblood of her work.

The performances will feature choreography created and performed by the dancers of American Repertory Ballet and the ARB/Princeton Ballet School Trainee Program. While no one will be turned away at the door, a suggested donation of $10 will go directly to the artists.
