Cary Shields made his Broadway debut in Rent, having toured with the U.S. national and Canadian companies. Cary is currently writing a musical, Lucky, with partner Mark Jackson and has also recorded with his band Poncho. Credits include Whizzer in Falsettos, Fox's "Dark Angel" and WB's "Guide to Becoming a Rock Star."

BWW Review: Iconic Music and Powerhouse Artists put Stevie Wonder and Prince Center Stage in UNCOVERED


When it comes to covering popular music, navigating the space between individual interpretation while still respecting the original artist's work could be a daunting task. And when the artists whose music is being covered are household names and legends in every way, there's also the need to ensure their fans appreciate the changes made in the reimagining.

Exactly ten years after closing on Broadway, Boy George's TABOO returned to New York for a very special two-night-only engagement benefiting Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS. The concert starred Matthew Rowland (Boy George) and Samuel Buttery (Leigh Bowery), both of whom reprised their performances from the 2012 revival of TABOO at the Brixton Clubhouse in London. Jeremy Kushnier (Footloose, Jersey Boys, Jesus Christ Superstar) took on the role of 'Philip Sallon.' In the video below, original 'Big Sue' Liz McCartney sings 'Talk Amongst Yourselves.'

On Monday Oct 29th members of the original Canadian cast of RENT gathered together with graduates from Sheridan College to perform a special benefit concern in support of Fife House. Produced by Michael Rubinoff, the event celebrated the 15th Anniversary of the Canadian production of the Tony Award Winning musical, and was a fantastic evening filled with songs and lots of love. On hand to celebrate were Chad Richardson, Cary Shields, Dominique Roy, Karen LeBlanc, Jenifer Aubry, Gavin Hope and Thom Allison. BWW is thrilled to bring its readers photos from the evening.

The 15th Anniversary of the Canadian cast of RENT is upon us, and alums from the original production are getting together with Sheridan College students for a very special concert to raise money for Fife House and honour the spirit of the show. Thom Allison, currently a judge on CBC's Over the Rainbow, has recently been added to the growing list of alum coming back for this one special night. He spoke to BWW about the message of RENT and how it's changed for him over the years, as well as how it applies to the young girls vying for the role of Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz.
