TOM JONES - WHITTIER COMMUNITY THEATRE
9 men, 10 women TOM JONES (mid 20's to early 30's) The hero of the story. Is often looked down on by others due to being a foundling. Gallant and likeable, albeit a bit naïve at times. In love with Sophia. PARTRIDGE (mid 30's to early 60's) narrator of the play. A surgeon, barber, and schoolmaster; he is loyal to Tom and follows him on his adventures. His advice for Tom often makes matters worse. MR. WESTERN (late 30's to mid 50's) Father to Sophia and neighbor to Tom. A loud and boisterous man, he is fond of Tom, until he discovers Tom's affections for Sophia. SQUIRE ALLWORTHY (late 30's to late 50's) Tom's wealthy adoptive caretaker. Believes he is kinder than he is and often mistakes people's actions as gratitude for his actions. BLIFIL (mid 20's to early 30's) Squire Allworthy's nephew. Tom's rival for Sophia's love. Though many favor him over Tom, he is in fact an underhanded coward. JUSTICE DOWLING (late 30's to late 60's) The local circuit judge. Always in a hurry and quick to pass sentence before evidence has even been given. MR. THWACKUM / CONSTABLE (early 40's to early 60's): Tom and Blifil's religion teacher, who favors Blifil over Tom. / The arresting officer who takes Tom into custody when he finds himself in a fight. CAPTAIN BLIFIL / DOCTOR / HIGHWAYMAN (early 20's to mid 30's): Blifil's father. Dies shortly after he marries Bridget Allworthy for her money. / A quack doctor who seems to make up symptoms and diagnoses as he goes. / An incompetent robber who, in an attempt to rob several characters, ends up robbed by his own victims. SOPHIA WESTERN (early to mid 20's) Tom's love interest, and Mr. Western's daughter. Her sweet and innocent nature hides a more fiery side when angry. MISS WESTERN (early 40's to early 60's) Mr. Western's sister. Has acted as a mother for Sophia through most of her life. Has a strict, no nonsense attitude and is a strong believer of customs. HARRIET FITZPATRICK (early to late 20's) Sophia's independent cousin. She has run away from her husband in an attempt to make a better life for herself. MRS. WATERS (late 30's to early 50's) A former servant of the Allworthy house who has mysterious connections to Tom's upbringing as well as Partidge's past. HONOUR (early 20's to early 30's) Sophia's loyal servant who often acts as a middle man for Sophia and Tom. Loves her master and is quick to try and cheer her up. BRIDGET ALLWORTHY / MRS. WHITEFIELD (mid 40's to late 50's) Squire Allworthy's sister and mother of Blifil. Implied she is past her prime but tries to keep up appearances. / The owner of the Upton Inn. A strong and independent woman. LADY BELLASTON (early-late 30's) Sophia's cousin. Pretends to have Sophia's best interest in mind, but attempts to steal Tom away from her. DEBORAH, SUSAN, and NANCY: (late teens to early 30's) Three servants constantly seen throughout the play. Will also act as indicators for the audience to boo the villain, cheer the hero, sigh for the damsel. EXTRA PERFORMERS (1 performer) PIANO PLAYER: A player who will add mood and setting to the show with the addition of atmosphere or pop culture music.
