PLAYFUL PEOPLE PRODUCTIONS SEEKS ADULTS AND TEENS FOR

THE ONE-ACT PLAY THAT GOES WRONG”

Playful People Productions is seeking teens and adults — with or without prior acting experience — for a July production of the uproarious comedy The One-Act Play That Goes Wrong, under the direction of company co-founder Katie D'Arcey. The One-Act Play That Goes Wrong will perform at Historic Hoover Theatre in San Jose, July 28—31. Registration is currently open; auditions will be held virtually. Proof of Covid vaccination is required for participation. For more information on Playful People and their programs, visit

The One-Act Play That Goes Wrong follows the antics of the Cornley Polytechnic Drama Society, who are trying their very best to stage a production of a 1920s murder mystery. As the show's title might suggest, this is not as easy as it sounds! Hilarity ensues as eight characters try their best to “perform,” while props go missing, actors forget lines, and the cast starts to crack under the pressure. This is the one-act version of the hit production of The Play That Goes Wrong, written by Henry Lewis, Jonathan Sayer, and Henry Shields of Mischief Theatre Company, that opened in the United Kingdom in 2012. It won Best New Comedy at the 2015 Laurence Olivier Awards.

As always, Playful People Productions is looking for people who want to have fun performing on stage — whether or not they have any prior stage experience. The One-Act Play That Goes Wrong will be performed with multiple casts of eight, which means everyone gets a good part; and staff is always ready with encouragement and helpful techniques for new performers.

Auditions will be virtual, with callbacks on Zoom. All casts will rehearse in person Mondays — Fridays starting July 11; teen casts from 4:30—6:30, and adult casts from 6:30—8:30. Not all performers will be called for all rehearsals. There will be also be optional Zoom rehearsals and read throughs before July 11, for anyone wanting to get a head start. Ages 14 and up are welcome.

Playful People Productions was first founded in 2010 as a positive, inclusive, family-focused theatre company, and has operated as a 501(c)3 nonprofit since 2017. While initially providing classes, camps, and shows for kids, the company has grown to offer similar classes for adults, and stages performances where family members can perform together. Most recently the organization has returned to its customary spaces at the Historic Hoover Theatre in San Jose, but is continuing some of its pandemic-responsive online programming (POP, Playful Online People) as well as On Demand video classes.

Mother and daughter team Barbara Galiotto and Katie D’Arcey are Positive Discipline trained; both have worked as early Childhood Educators; and as professional directors with children’s theater. The pair have approximately 50 years experience between them in the musical theater world and, together with a small team of permanent staff and an array of talented directors, teachers, and support personnel, offer beginner through advanced theatre experiences for the whole family.
