The Music Man – Auditions



January 28 – 29, and Feb 2



Choreography – Feb 12; Callbacks – Feb 13





Steel River Playhouse and director Kristin McLaughlin are holding auditions for men, women, teens, and children age 6+ for a June production of the musical, Meredith Willson’s THE MUSIC MAN.





Auditions are January 28th, 29th, and February 2nd, with choreography on February 12th and callbacks on February 13th. Appointments preferred. Roles are nonunion and unpaid; however, small travel stipends and housing may be available for certain roles for actors with long drive times. Ethnic diversity is encouraged. Rehearsals are generally evenings/weekends.





ADULT MALE ROLES



Harold Hill – age 30 – 50, charismatic and charming con man and traveling salesman; falls in love with Marian, average singer/mover. (Vocal Range: B to High G)



Marcellus Washburn – age 25 – 55, comical friend of Harold Hill and former con man; has settled down as a resident of River City. (Tenor: G to High A)



Mayor Shinn – age 40 – 65, pompous local politician, good comic timing. (Non-singing role)

Barbershop Quartet, Charlie Cowell, and other featured roles - All age 25+, singing and non-singing roles.

River City Townspeople – small town folks who are proud of their town.





ADULT FEMALE ROLES



Marian Paroo – age 20s- 40, attractive town librarian and part-time piano teacher who falls in love with Harold Hill. (Soprano: Low G to High A)



Mrs. Paroo – age 45 – 60, mother to Marian and Winthrop, capable of Irish brogue. (Alto: A flat - High E flat)



Eulalie MacKecknie Shinn – age 35 – 65, self-important mayor’s wife, good comic timing. (Alto: D - High D)

Ethel Toffelmier – age 25 – 50 (a “curvaceous 35”), jolly and friendly, dating Marcellus. (Alto: D - High D)

Pick-A-Little Ladies (4 to 8 principal and featured roles) – Age 25+, core group, strong singers, comic timing, move well, married to 3 of the Barbershop Quartet men. (Vocal Range: D - High D)

River City Townspeople – small town folks who are proud of their town. (Vocal Range: various)





CHILDREN AND YOUTH ROLES



Winthrop Paroo – male, age 6 – 11, Marian’s shy, younger brother, speaks with a lisp, begins shy and blossoms. (Alto: C - E flat)



Tommy Djilas – male, age 15 – early 20s, handsome “bad boy” teenager who has a crush on Zaneeta. (Non-singing role; moves well)



Zaneeta Shinn – female, age 14 – early 20s, Mayor’s and Eulalie’s teenage daughter who has a crush on Tommy Djilas. (Non-singing role; moves well)



Amaryllis – female, age 8 to early teens, slightly bratty young piano student of Marian’s who likes Winthrop. (Alto: C to E)



Gracie Shinn – female, age 6 – 11, Mayor’s and Eulalie’s younger daughter; a tomboy and a bit devilish. (Vocal Range: B – E flat)



Ensemble - teens and kids to play townspeople, teen dancers, Wa Tan Ye girls, boys’ band (Vocal Range: various)

ABOUT THE DIRECTOR –KRISTIN MCLAUGHLIN



Kristin McLaughlin has been working as an actress and director/choreographer in NYC for almost two decades. Recently she assistant directed the Broadway Revival of Lend Me a Tenor, directed by Stanley Tucci, receiving critical acclaim for the “curtain call” of Tenorwhich she directed and staged, (3 Tony nominations including Best Revival of a Play), directed The Incredibly Deaf Musical at The Duke Theatre in NYC as part of The New York Musical Theatre Festival, Ave. Q at The Geva Theatre (voted Best of Rochester 2012), Next to Normal, Avenue Q, and Spamalot at The Cape Rep Theatre, Lydia (world première), The Last 5 Years, and A Christmas Carol. Kristin has also worked as assistant director on dozens of productions including the European Tour of A Chorus Line, I/O (world premiere, Theatre Garonne, Toulouse), and The Music Man National Tour, with directors such as Chet Walker, Troy Garza and Phil Soltanoff. As an actor, Kristin has performed in over 20 countries worldwide. Some of her favorite roles include Shelia in A Chorus Line, Lola in Damn Yankees, Rachael in As It Is In Heaven, Cathy in The Last 5 Years, and Philia in …Forum. Off Broadway Kristin played Leila inSessions, Laurette in What Makes Sammy Run, and over 20 roles in The World According to Ruth Wallis. She has been lucky enough to work with many amazing actors including Justin Bartha, Tony Shalhoub, Anthony LaPaglia, Jennifer Aniston, Paul Rudd, Marni Nixon, Spiro Malas, Jan Maxwell, Dan Finnerty, and Nicole Kidman. She earned a BFA in musical theatre from Emerson College, and studied conservation biology with a fellowship at Columbia University’s Graduate Certificate Program in NYC.
