The 39 Steps

Synopsis
Mix a Hitchcock masterpiece with a juicy spy novel, add a dash of Monty Python and you have the intriguing, thrilling, riotous and unmissable comedy. Bored with his aimless life, Richard Hannay decides to go to the theatre. While there he meets a mysterious woman who turns out to be a secret agent trying to save England from a mysterious foreign power. When she is murdered in his apartment, he finds himself accused and escapes to Scotland in hopes of completing her mission. On the train he meets a beautiful blonde named Pamela, then barely escapes the police. As he is chased across the moors, he is assisted by a farmer's wife, reconnects with the same blonde, hides in an out of the way hotel, and finally forced to outsmart a team of spies in order to save England. A cast of 4 plays over 150 characters in this fast-paced tale of an ordinary man on an extraordinarily entertaining adventure. The 39 Steps contains every single legendary scene from the award-winning movie - including the chase on the Flying Scotsman, the escape on the Forth Bridge, the first theatrical bi-plane crash ever staged and the sensational death-defying finale in the London Palladium.

Character Breakdown
RICHARD HANNAY: (late 30s-early 40s) Upper-class Englishman, handsome, square-jawed leading man, quite aware of how attractive he is, back in London after a time abroad with enough money to keep him idle, at loose ends, bored stiff, a chance meeting at a West End show with Annabella Schmidt (a beautiful European woman on the run from spies) leads to him being framed for her murder, goes on the run, one step ahead of the police, trying to clear his name and stop a spy ring from taking government secrets out of the country, actor playing this role will not play any other roles, English accent required;
ANNABELLA SCHMIDT / PAMELA / MARGARET: (mid to late 30s) One actress will play all three roles, including PAMELA, the classic Hitchcock leading lady, beautiful, stylish, warm, intelligent, feisty, meets Richard by accident on a train as he is trying to escape from the police, unwillingly becomes caught up in his life and escape, sure he is a homicidal murderer until she eventually realizes he is telling the truth and falls in love with him as well, English accent required, ANNABELLA SCHMIDT, mysterious Russian beauty a la Garbo, being pursued by spies, an agent in a life or death game of espionage that she unfortunately loses, murdered in Richard's apartment before finishing her mission, Russian accent required, and MARGARET, fresh and innocent Scottish farmwife, married to an older, cold, and abusive man, living in the middle of nowhere, thrilled when Richard stumbles across their farm, helps him in any way she can, no matter the consequences, Scottish accent required.
MAN #1: (mid 30s-early 50s) Must be a superb comedic actor who will play many roles, with ages ranging from teens-60s, male and female, roles include but are not limited to MR. MEMORY, West End music hall performer, whose act consists of knowing the answer to any question asked, his involvement in the espionage plot does not become apparent until the end of the show, Cockney accent required, CROFTER, Scottish tenant farmer, married to Margaret, cold, suspicious, a bully, abusive to his wife, betrays his promise to help Richard, Scottish accent, MRS. JORDAN, Professor Jordan's wife, upper-class Brit, seemingly warm and helpful, English accent required, and MR. MCGARRIGLE, runs a country hotel with his wife, sweet if a bit dim, Scottish accent required;
MAN #2: (mid 30s-early 50s) Same type as Man 1. Roles include but are not limited to MUSIC HALL COMPERE, master of ceremonies at a West End music hall where Mr. Memory performs, Cockney accent required, MILKMAN, cheeky chap, happy to help Richard out when he thinks Richard is trying to escape an assignation with a married woman, Cockney, PROFESSOR JORDAN, upper-class George Sanders-type Englishman who Richard believes can help him, turns out he is the head of the spy ring trying to steal government secrets, English and German accents required, SHERIFF, Scottish sheriff, doesn't believe Richard's story, turns him over to Professor Jordan, upper class Scottish accent required, a la Jean Brodie, and MRS. GARRIGLE, she and her husband run an out-of-the-way country hotel in Scotland that Richard and Pamela stay at, feminine, sweet, romantic, thrilled to believe that Richard and Pamela are an eloping young couple in love, Scottish accent required.
Little Women
Character Breakdown
Faithfully adapted from the classic novel, the characters are true to life and NOT stock musical theatre types. This story takes place in the 1860's, during the Civil War, and the acting must be genuine, innocent and very real. (Age ranges listed below reflect the characters, not necessarily the actors)

The March Sisters:

Meg - plays late teens to mid twenties, the eldest girl, a natural beauty. Looking for a strong and attractive actress who can sing and dance.

Jo - plays late teens to mid twenties, somewhat based on Louisa May Alcott. Looking for a vibrantly intelligent, strong willed, charismatic actress - must be a very strong and confident singer (large range), and needs a natural boyish toughness and strong stage presence. Definitely a woman ahead of the social
and cultural rules of the era. (Originally Sutton Foster).

Beth - plays mid teens to early twenties, the kindest and gentlest soul. Looking for a gifted actress with a strong soprano voice, and the ability to convey warmth and sweetness easily. Preferably fragile and small.

Amy - plays early teens to late teens, a difficult acting role: she grows from a petulant narcissistic brat to a optimistic and kind young woman. Acting for this role is the priority, but she must sing and move as well.

Adults :

Marmee - the matriarch of the March Family. Plays middle-aged / aging. A strong and loving parent, who maintains the home while her husband fights for the Union Army. Must have an exceptionally strong voice - has two intense ballads, and the ability to command the audience.

Aunt March - elderly great aunt to the four daughters, aunt to Mr March. (Think Maggie Smith from 1800's New England.) She is an impressive and powerful woman (in a smaller package) and does not suffer fools - at all. Looking for an excellent actress with a voice appropriate to the age of the character.

Mr Laurence - middle-aged to older man, very wealthy businessman. Appears very staunch and humorless at first, proves to be a pussycat later. Grandfather to Laurie, next door neighbors to the March Family.
A warm and solid actor who can sing and move well.

Young Men :

Laurie - plays mid-teens to mid twenties, preferably tall and dark haired. Looking for a charming and energetic actor who can sing very well (Tenor !) and move well. Important acting role with challenging vocals.

Mr Brooke - plays early to late twenties, Laurie's tutor, Meg's future husband. Looking for a gentle and intelligent actor with a strong baritenor voice.

Professor Bhaer - plays late 30's, a German transplant to America who meets Jo as she begins her professional career. Looking for a strong actor, with a warm bari-tenor voice. An imposing gentle giant build would be helpful.

***In the Broadway production, all of the above actors doubled several smaller supporting roles. I would prefer to cast a small but versatile ensemble to handle the many important others in the story : an Irish landlady, partygoers at a Ball, numerous characters from Jo's stories (that sing / act), offstage vocals, etc.
Looking for energetic and positive actors who would like to be part of an important team that will make this story come to life.
