The Music Man is a fantastic musical with book, music, and lyrics by Meredith Willson, based on a story by Willson and Franklin Lacey. In 1957, the show became a hit on Broadway, winning five Tony Awards, including Best Musical. The cast album won the first Grammy Award for Best Musical Theater Album. The show's success led to revivals, including a long-running 2000 Broadway revival, a popular 1962 film adaptation and a 2003 television remake.

STORY: In July 1912, fast-talking traveling salesman “Professor” Harold Hill is known among his peers as a master of getting folks to fall hook, line, and sinker for his ploy: he presents himself as a music professor, selling band instruments, uniforms, and the idea of starting a band – and ensuring he skips town with the funds before he has to make good on the promise. He comes to River City, Iowa, a town known to be especially cool toward strangers. Harold soon enchants nearly the entire town apart from Marian Paroo, the local librarian and part-time piano teacher. The rest of the story takes us on a journey involving a change of heart for every character as each of them, even Harold, realize that attitudes can soften and nothing is as black-and-white as we may believe.

Rehearsals begin Monday, August 22, 2016 and then continue:
Mondays 7:30 pm to 10:30 pm
Wednesdays 7:30 pm to 10:30 pm
Sundays 1:00 pm to 6:00 pm

Some additional or longer rehearsals will be held once the production has moved to the theatre. Rehearsals are as follows:

Sunday, October 30, 2016 (Sitzprobe and Q2Q Technical Rehearsal) – 10:00am – 9:00pm

PERFORMANCE DATES:
November 3-6, 10-13, 17-19, 2016
The two Sunday performances (Nov 6 and 13) and the final Saturday performance (Nov 19) are matinées at 2:00 pm; all other performances are at 8:00 pm. Additional performances may be scheduled on November 9 (evening) or November 16 (evening).

PERFORMANCE LOCATION: Scarborough Village Theatre, 3300 Kingston Road (NE corner of Kingston and Markham)


AUDITION REQUIREMENTS:
1. Everyone auditioning should prepare a song from a musical - please NO songs from The Music Man or rock musicals; an accompanist will be provided, please bring a clean, clear copy of your music in the correct key. No ipads or recorded tracks! Keep the vocal range/style of the character you’re auditioning for in mind. For barbershop quartets interested in auditioning for the quartet roles, you can prepare one barbershop song (not from Music Man) and perform as a group. You will be required to do the other audition requirements (monologue/joke and dance) too.

2. Everyone auditioning should prepare a short monologue or a story/joke; please know your material well enough to do some easy improvisation work using the text of your piece.

3. Everyone auditioning must participate in a group movement/dance audition. Please bring comfortable clothing and appropriate footwear (no bare feet, sock feet, or stilettos), and plan to take some time to stretch.

CALL-BACK AUDITIONS:
Sunday, June 12, 2016 1:00 pm to 8:00 pm
Although call-back auditions are scheduled for 7 hours on June 12, individuals called back will be given a schedule specific to the characters for which they are being considered; this schedule will be communicated to each performer by e-mail by Friday, June 3. People auditioning should inform the producers, at the time of their first audition, if there is any time on that day during which they are unavailable.
If called back for a role (or roles), actors will be asked to prepare specific scenes and musical selections from the show. These will be sent via email along with callback notifications.

CASTING INFORMATION:
The Music Man includes many interesting roles – both principal and ensemble – for both men and women. There is opportunity for casting individuals from a wide range of ages. The majority of cast members will be expected to sing and move well.

ROLES AVAILABLE:
Please note that age ranges given in the descriptions indicate appearance onstage as opposed to actor’s chronological age. If there is an accent/speech style requirement it is noted below.
Approx. 20 men and women, including:

MARIAN PAROO (25 – 35, Soprano, Low G to High G): The town librarian and part-time piano teacher and an “old maid” by 1912 standards. Starts off very no-nonsense and stern, highly protective of her own standards and the people she cares about, but transforms into an open, trusting romantic lead. She also has an air of confidence and maturity that ultimately draws Harold to fall for her. Must have a beautiful lyrical voice and ability to move well.

MRS. PAROO (40+, Mezzo-Soprano/Belt, Middle C to High E flat; Irish Accent) Straight-talking but deeply caring mother of Marian and Winthrop. A widow, she’s concerned that her daughter will end up alone and urges her to be less idealistic about life. Good sense of rhythm and ability to act through singing.

EULALIE MACKECKNIE SHINN (40+, ensemble singing) The mayor’s wife, who considers herself the grand dame of River City. Requires great comic timing, including some physical comedy.

ALMA HIX, MRS. SQUIRES, MAUD DUNLOP, ETHEL TOFFELMEIER (25+, ensemble singing) These are the “Pick-a-little” ladies, Eulalie’s gossipy little group who disapprove of Marian. Great acting, singing, and movement opportunities as they also transform into Eulalie’s “interpretive ballet” troupe.

HAROLD HILL (30+, Baritone, Low B flat to High F) An incredibly charming and smooth-talking con man who can switch gears on a dime and turn every situation to his advantage. He commands the entire stage as easily as he commands the attention and belief of the people he sells to. Exceptional sense of rhythm and musicality required, as well as the acting ability to evolve from a lovable rogue to a genuinely caring and self-reflective romantic lead.

MAYOR SHINN. (40+, ensemble singing) A blustery, self-important pillar of the community who takes himself very seriously. He’s also a rather weather-beaten father of a family full of female drama.

MARCELLUS WASHBURN (25+: Tenor, Low G to High A) A former cohort of Harold’s, he has since “gone straight” and settled down in River City. A classic “sidekick” in whom Harold can confide. Good comic timing and good movement needed, as he leads the cast in one of the full-group dance numbers.

CHARLIE COWELL (18+, ensemble singing) A bitter, angry salesman who has been burned by the aftermath of Harold Hill’s scheme in other towns. This actor will likely double as a River City citizen.

EWART DUNLOP, OLIVER HIX, JACEY SQUIRES, OLIN BRITT (The School Board) (18+, Jacey - Tenor I: B below middle C to high B; Ewart - Tenor II: D flat below middle C to high G; Oliver – Baritone: low C sharp to F sharp above middle C; Olin – Bass: low F sharp to B just below middle C) A highlight of the show, these men sing several beautiful barbershop numbers and add comedy through their ongoing squabbling that is instantly dissolved when they sing. These actors will also be included in scenes and movement numbers involving the townsfolk.

TOWNSPEOPLE OF RIVER CITY (All ages, ensemble singing) Most of the ensemble roles include some speaking parts and some solo singing as well as movement in larger musical numbers. They are integral to providing the feel of a closely-knit town and undergo a tangible character development arc over the course of the story.

WINTHROP PAROO (Middle C to High E flat, unchanged voice) Marian’s young brother, who faces several challenges as he is not only self-conscious about his lisp but has also become socially withdrawn after the death of his father. Harold Hill’s presence completely changes him; he comes out of his shell and becomes confident and happy.

AMARYLLIS (Middle C to High E, piano playing skill an asset but not necessity) Young piano student of Marian’s. She is a nice girl but has a habit of being too honest at times!

ZANEETA SHINN (teen, strong dancer) The mayor’s daughter, rather giggly and prone to teenage drama. She has a crush on Tommy, the boy from the wrong side of the tracks. Good acting skills are needed as she anchors one of the running gags of the show.

TOMMY DJILAS (teen, strong dancer) The teen heartthrob of the show, he has a crush on Zaneeta. He starts out as the town trouble-maker, but becomes a dependable and earnest young man.

GRACIE SHINN (youth, younger than Zaneeta) Zaneeta’s sister, who adds to the Shinn family antics as a tattle-tale.

ENSEMBLE YOUTHS (ensemble singing) These performers need strong movement skills and excellent sense of rhythm. They contribute to the strong identity of River City but also help reinforce the energy that begins to swell up in the townsfolk as Harold begins to change their lives.
