Today, Wolverhampton Grand Theatre announced auditions for selected roles in a brand new production of BRASSED OFF, marking the first major production to be produced in-house at the venue for more than 40 years.

Auditions will be held at Newhampton Arts Centre on Saturday 1 and Sunday 2 April for various roles that will give the local community the opportunity to appear in the production.

Auditionees may be required to attend both audition days and will be required to attend all rehearsals they are called for within the rehearsal period. Anyone wishing to audition must also be available for all performances.

The roles that will be cast from the local community are:

JIM (in his 40s) is a member of the local Miners Brass Band. Stocky, manual pit worker (Jim smaller than Harry). The actor playing Jim must be able to handle comedy well as he and Harry both enjoy a close, jokey relationship with one another. Jim plays the Euphonium in the Band. Whilst it’s not essential for the actor to play the instrument, should they be able to (or have a knowledge of handling musical instruments) it could be advantageous.

HARRY (in his 40s) is a member of the local Miners Brass Band. Stocky, manual pit worker (Harry bigger than Jim). The actor playing Jim must be able to handle comedy well as he and Harry both enjoy a close, jokey relationship with one another. Harry plays the Tuba. Whilst it’s not essential for the actor to play the instrument, should they be able to (or have a knowledge of handling musical instruments) it could be advantageous.

RITA (in her 40s) is Harry’s wife and more ‘militant’ than friend Vera. She’s an active member in the community’s support for the Miners Union against Pit closures and leads the local ‘Women Against Pit Closures’ picketing group.

VERA (in her 40s) is Jim’s wife and works in the local supermarket. Not as politically active as Rita, and at times feels guilty about this. More interested in shopping at IKEA than taking part in Rita’s picket line.

CRAIG and MELODY (aged 7 – 9) are the young children of Andy and Sandra. These are non-speaking roles but essential to the story.

ENSEMBLE of mixed aged male and female members will play assorted roles such as Miner’s Wives on the picket line, Male Bailiffs and Miners.

BRASSED OFF, from Wednesday 23 August – Saturday 2 September 2017, is written by Paul Allen, adapted from the screenplay by Mark Herman. It’s 1992; and Danny’s lifelong ambition to lead Grimley Colliery Band to the National Brass Band Competition at the Royal Albert Hall looks like it might finally happen. But as Grimley pit faces closure, the future looks bleak as the town is thrown into conflict. Flugelhorn player Gloria arrives in town bringing with her a renewed sense of hope and a touch of romance, but no-one knows who she’s really playing for...

BRASSED OFF will be directed by Gareth Tudor-Price, formerly Artistic Director of Hull Truck Theatre. Set and costume design is by John Brooking.

BRASSED OFF was first performed at the Crucible Theatre, Sheffield on 17thMarch 1998.
