PLAYFUL PEOPLE PRODUCTIONS SEEKS TEEN / TWEEN ACTORS FOR INTERACTIVE ORIGINAL MUSICAL

AXOLORIS”

Playful People Productions is seeking young performers for a production of an interactive, original musical, Axoloris, under the direction of Celia Scheuerman. Young actors, ages 10—16, perform this tale of discovering not only the importance of protecting their community from an energy crisis, but a journey to self-discovery. Axoloris, written by (and under the vocal direction of) Sean Mendelson, will perform at Historic Hoover Theatre in San Jose, July 1-3. Registration opens April 11; auditions will be held May 9-11. For more information on Playful People and their programs, visit

AXOLORIS is set in an imaginary future in which humans rely heavily on virtual reality and robots. Five young friends are preparing for Earth Day, which is now also a celebration of Axoloris — a spiritual messenger said to visit people in their dreams and inspire them to protect the planet. The night before Earth Day, all five have a shared vision of Axoloris, which leads them on an environmental adventure; while simultaneously, the youths come to terms with how they relate to one another and to the world at large, and make changes for the better.

A coming of age story, AXOLORIS also allows audiences to be part of deciding where the story goes; and hopefully, ends up inspiring them to make changes in their own lives. Roles for teens and tweens include the five friends, an old man who changes his ways, a robot, the Earth Day being Axoloris (based in part on Axolotl, an amphibian Mexican salamander), and more.

Playful People Productions was first founded in 2010 as a positive, inclusive, family-focused theatre company, and has operated as a 501(c)3 nonprofit since 2017. While initially providing classes, camps, and shows for kids, the company has grown to offer similar classes for adults, and stages performances where family members can perform together. Most recently the organization has returned to its customary spaces at the Historic Hoover Theatre in San Jose, but is continuing some of its pandemic-responsive online programming (POP, Playful Online People) as well as On Demand video classes.

Mother and daughter team Barbara Galiotto and Katie D’Arcey are Positive Discipline trained; both have worked as early Childhood Educators; and as professional directors with children’s theater. The pair have approximately 50 years experience between them in the musical theater world and, together with a small team of permanent staff and an array of talented directors, teachers, and support personnel, offer beginner through advanced theatre experiences for the whole family.
