With Rinaldo wrote his first opera Handel in 1710 for a theatre in London. It was an unprecedented success. He established his reputation in the city where he would settle. Handel was based on an episode from the then widely read epic Gerusalemme liberata by the Italian poet Torquato Tasso. The cross Knight Rinaldo is the hand of Almirena promised. They will only be kidnapped by a sorceress. Rinaldo comes looking for her. What follows is a long trip full of unexpected twists and turns. The story inspired Handel to one of his most colorful scores. He picked up the public in with exciting, virtuoso Arias, spectacular effects and colourful orchestration. Well known is the poignant aria Lascia ch'io pianga, in which Almirena Weeps over her fate. Often heard in recitals and used in multiple feature films of Farinelli to Lars von Triers Antichrist.
