Mighty Real: A Fabulous Sylvester Musical celebrates the life of the original 1970s “Queen of Disco,” Sylvester. Nominated for a 2015 Off-Broadway Alliance Award for Best New Musical and honored with five nominations for New York’s prestigious Audelco Awards for Excellence in Black Theater, Mighty Real: A Fabulous Sylvester Musical features the enormous musical talents of Broadway’s Anthony Wayne and a stellar cast featuring Anastacia McCleskey & Jacqueline B. Arnold as Martha Wash and Izora Rhodes Armsteda, a.k.a. the Weather Girls. Supporting cast DeAnne Stewart and Rahmel McDade and an electrifying five-piece band deliver the infectious music and uplifting lyrics of Sylvester for a festive atmosphere that has audiences dancing in the aisles. Mighty Real: A Fabulous Sylvester Musical is directed Kendrell Bowman, who also serves as the show’s costume designer; set and lighting design by two-time Tony-nominee David Lander (Bengal Tiger at the Baghdad Zoo, 33 Variations), sound design by Rafe Carlotto / Sound Associates, and choreography by Anastacia McCleskey. Sylvester was an iconic artist who achieved national and international fame and lived as an out gay man at a time when very few people were willing to do so. He is celebrated in San Francisco’s Castro District with a star on the Rainbow Walk, and last year the SF Board of Supervisors declared March 13th A Mighty Real Fabulous Sylvester Day honoring Sylvester and the show’s creators. Sylvester was and continues to be beloved in this community and all over the world. Mighty Real is rooted in the struggle of both the African American and LGBTQ communities, making the show a transformative and illuminating experience for all Bay Area audiences.
