'Lal Qile Ka Aakhri Mushaera' is the re-creation of what was supposedly the last 'poetic congregation' during the reign of the Mughol Emperor and eminent poet, Bahadur Shah 'Zafar', played by none other than Tom Alter, a master of Urdu, Acting and History telling.

The importance of this historic event lies in the fact that it literally assembled on one stage the tallest figures of Urdu Poetry.

The play, therefore, beautifully relives the 'Golden Period' of Urdu Poetry by assembling on one stage Ustaad Zauq, Mirza Ghalib, Momin, Zafar, Dagh, Azurdah, Aish, Sheftah, Balmukund Huzoor, Tishnah, Daagh, Ustaad Shauq, Sakhanand Raqam and many more.

In the process, this highly rich costume and period drama brings forth the poetry of the finest quality and class: For instance, Ghalib's, 'Ibn-e Maryam hua kare koi', Zauq's, 'Laayi hayaat aaye, qaza le chali chale', Momin's, 'Asar us ko zara nahin hota', Zafar's, 'Ya mujhe afsar-e shahana banaya hota'.

No less does the play take the audiences back to the past to come face to face with the legends - their elegant recitation styles and mannerisms, their inter-person relationships, their exclusive get ups and, most important of all, their excellent sense of humor as reflected in repartees they frequently exchange with one another during the course of the Mushaera.

In the broader sense, the play showcases the life and living in 'Dehli', before it began to undergo a sea change - politically, socially and culturally - in the wake of the First War for Independence.
