It is exactly 75 years since Louis Vierne, the most famous pupil of César Franck and Charles-Marie Widor and the blind organist of the cathedral of Notre-Dame de Paris, died at the organ console while giving the 1,750th recital of his career. With 1,750 concerts, had Widor nurtured an heir to Bach? The back rest of the bench held Vierne’s body in place so that the audience’s attention was initially held only by the note sustained perpetually by his foot. Several minutes later, word of the 67-year-old master’s death spread like wildfire. ?Astounding events like this which have occurred throughout the history of this queen of instruments will provide the theme of the fourth evening in a highly successful series by László Fassang and Pál Mácsai. Tragedies, conspiracies, sinister intrigues and unfortunate accidents, tensions flaring between nations and astonishing personal destinies are brought to life in Mácsai’s narration, while Fassang and the most talented organ pupils from the Liszt Academy perform all the music – by the defining composers of organ works of the past 300 years – placing these astounding but true stories in their proper context.
