Crazy things are afoot at the mental institute. Two people have come to see Darlemont, the director: one is Venanzio, who has brought his ward, Cristina, with him. The other is Eustachio, who claims to be a doctor. As it turns out, Venanzio is secretly after his ward's inheritance, which he thinks he can acquire by having Cristina locked up in a madhouse; Eustachio, on the other hand, is a common charlatan who is in reality a trumpet player who has deserted from a regiment of dragoons. Another visitor arrives; this time it's Colonel Blinval, who, oddly enough, knows everyone there: Cristina is in love with the colonel, who supposedly has promised the girl to marry her, just as soon as he becomes a widower; it's from Blinval's regiment, on the other hand, that Eustachio has absconded, and now he's terrified that his former superior will recognise him and get him into a world of trouble. Darlemont himself does not know the soldier, but they are related to each other by family, since Blinval is none other than the husband of Darlemont's niece, Norina. Norina and Blinval have been married for somewhat over three years, but after a month of domestic life together, Colonel Blinval was ordered elsewhere, and the couple have not seen each other since. Norina has been trying to catch up with her husband ever since, which is why she's rushed to her uncle's city, where the regiment of dragoons has also arrived.

In order to determine whether Blinval loves his wife or not, Darlemont advises Norina to pretend to be mad. Upon seeing his wife, Blinval immediately starts to burn with passion, but Norina pretends not to recognise him in her madness. Blinval grows jealous, suspecting that, before their marriage, his wife had a lover who is a dragoon, and that is why she has come to the city. He decides that he too will pretend to be mad in order to make his wife jealous. In the meantime, Eustachio attempts to flee from the colonel, with little success, while Cristina tries to escape from the madhouse. After a great deal of frantic confusion, the married couple are happily reconciled, Eustachio is forgiven by all, and Christina realises that the best thing for her is to remain in the insane asylum.
