BroadwayWorld is excited to report that THE SWEET POTATO QUEENS, a new musical based on the Sweet Potato Queens books by Jill Conner Browne, will make its world premiere on the TUTS Underground stage in March.

Journey along with main character, Jill, as she and her friends face many of life's challenges and learn to celebrate what makes each of them special. This decidedly southern story offers audiences a universal message of human empowerment showing how life can change when you listen to your heart.

The musical is being developed in partnership with Grammy award winning singer/songwriter Melissa Manchester (music), Oscar nominee, multiple No. 1 songwriter and Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame inductee, Sharon Vaughn (lyrics) and Rupert Holmes (book). Holmes is the first person in theatrical history to solely win Tony Awards for Best Book and Best Music and Lyrics, and Best Musical for The Mystery of Edwin Drood. For his play Say Goodnight, Gracie, he earned a 2004 National Broadway Theater Award and a Best Play Tony nomination. He most recently was represented on Broadway by Curtains, winning several awards and eight Tony nominations.
