Breakdown

CURRENTLY SEEKING:

TONY:
18 & up to play late teens - 20s. Young man, genuine but troubled, trying to find a way out of the violent but tight-knit gang system he grew up in. He is the former leader of the Jets, but wants a different future for himself. Tony finds that future (he thinks) when he meets Maria, his first love. The ties that bind him to his past create an impossible conflict for him, and he ultimately meets an untimely end. Strong actor with a warm baritone (or dark tenor) and a huge top. Must be able to solidly sing a high B flat. Ideally will have strong dance skill. All ethnicities/races considered. RANGE: Bb2 - Bb4

MARIA:
18 & up to play late teens. Bernardo's sister. Innocent, but with an uncommon grace and maturity beyond her years. She falls in love with Tony and finds herself at the center of the violent conflict between the two gangs. Excellent soprano to a high C. Strong actress. Moderate dancer. RANGE: Bb3 – C6

RIFF:
18 & up to play late teens - 20s. Leader of the Jets. Tony's best friend. Charismatic, confident, and likeable – but underneath it all there is a strong streak of dominance. He is never afraid of a fight, and seeks to establish the Jets as the kings of the neighborhood. Strong bari-tenor and strong dancer. All ethnicities/races considered. RANGE: Bb2 – G4

ANITA:
Early 20s - early 30s. Bernardo's Girlfriend. Sexy, vivacious, & full of life, she has a sharp wit and a huge heart. She dispenses older sister advice to Maria and tries to shield her from the dangers of the gangs. Must be an excellent dancer and an actor with great depth. Strong belt to C#. RANGE: F3 - D5

BERNARDO:
Early 20s - early 30s. Leader of the Sharks. Maria's brother and Anita's boyfriend. Proud, strong, and handsome with a short fuse. Puerto Rican, masculine; under enormous pressure to defend his rights and place as a new American. Must be a strong dancer and actor. RANGE: Bb2 – Eb4

CHINO:
18 & up to play late teens. An angry and, at times, naive Shark. When his father-figure, Bernardo, is killed, he turns murderous and vengeful. As the intended husband of Maria, his actions propel the play to its tragic end. Featured acting role – some singing and dancing. Baritone.
