BREAKDOWN
NOTE: The War Boys is a 90-minute play about three young men patrolling the Texas/Mexican border. As they wait and watch for people crossing illegally, they play a game that gives us insight into the influences that have shaped their views of the world. The play invites us to examine sexism, racism, and xenophobia present in contemporary American culture. It is also a study of the relationship between young men and violence. Despite the fact that The War Boys was written in the early 90s, the play is now more important than ever.
Seeking:
[DAVID]
Male, 20s – early 30s. Repressed, angry, All-American boy who hides his secrets behind anger and manipulation. Looks for opportunities to assert power to cover up his anger and insecurities. Blood hungry. Funny, sharp and keenly intelligent which allows him to show his charm. Volunteers as a minuteman on the Texas/Mexican border. Leader of the gang.
[GREG]
Male, 20s - early 30s. The son of a white border patrol and a Mexican immigrant, now volunteering as a minuteman. Physically strong/fit. He's lived a rough life and actively conceals the truth of his experiences. He has learned how to fit in with both Mexican and white Americans, but doesn't feel at home with either. Duty and commitment are both important to him, though often feels conflicted about to whom he should feel committed. Classically trained actor a plus.
[GEORGE]
Male, 20s – early 30s. Big stature. Sweet and kind with a heart of gold. Takes care of his younger brother on his own on top of an 80-hour work week. Works hard and has a strong moral center. Not the brightest crayon in the box, but has a big imagination and a good sense of humor.
[UNDERSTUDY]
Male, 20s – early 30s. To cover all of the roles – DAVID, GREG, GEORGE.
