BREAKDOWN

For generations, Edgar’s family has raised and trained a special breed of dog in the northern woods of Wisconsin. The Sawtelles love and understand these animals. In fact, Edgar, who has never spoken, has always been able to easily communicate with his canine friends; and together, they see and hear everything. When his uncle fatally betrays his father, Edgar knows the truth—but no one will hear him. This achingly beautiful retelling of Hamlet is sure to move and haunt you.

EDGAR SAWTELLE: 14 years old, born mute, an observer ho communicates with those around him using a made up sign language. Using the “Book-It Style” to activate the narrative, Edgar will also speak in this production.

GAR SAWTELLE/ENSEMBLE: 40s-50s, Edgar’s father. Kindhearted, hardworking and honest.

CLAUDE SAWTELLE/ENSEMBLE: 40s-50s, Edgar’s uncle, Gar’s brother. The outcast of the Sawtelle family, dangerous.

TRUDY SAWTELLE/ENSEMBLE: 40s, Edgar’s mother. Gentle, loving, and a precise dog trainer, she becomes emotionally unstable when her husband dies.

ALMONDINE/ENSEMBLE: Edgar’s dog, friend, and guide.

PAGE PAPINEAU/ENSEMBLE: 50-60s, the veterinarian.

GLEN PAPINEAU/ENSEMBLE: 30s, Page’s son, a sheriff.

Unless textually specified, all roles are open to actors of all races, ethnicities, genders and abilities, and actors of all identities are strongly encouraged to audition.
