Breakdown

2013-14 Season and roles for which AEA Contracts will be considered:

LOVE/SICK
by John Cariani
Contract dates: Sep 30 – Oct 27, 2013.

Love/Sick is a comedy with serious undertones for four actors (2 men, 2 women) who play different combinations of suburban upper middle class couples who are at a crossroads in their lives, late 30s/early 40s.

All of the characters in the play are essentially heart-centered, quirky, comic, endearing romantics who have lost their way. The innocent, idealistic and joyful expression of love they once knew, has grown overwhelmed by the realities of children, jobs, stress and heartbreak, and they are all earnestly trying to find their way back to that sweet spot of love and happiness.

A CHRISTMAS CAROL

Both British dialect and Standard American Speech are used in this adaptation. Show requires versatile actors who make playful choices and are good with language.

TIGERS BE STILL
by Kim Rosenstock
Contract dates: Jan 6 – Feb 2, 2014.
This is a very funny and moving comedy about overcoming depression and disconnection. All actors must have great comic instincts grounded in emotional truth.

Seeking:

Sherry − 24, a quirky, sweet, idealistic, “good” girl with a heart of gold. She recently completed a degree in Art Therapy, and is determined to succeed using art to heal her fellow man. She battles her own depression and insecurities with her positive, hopeful, “can do” idealism and her belief in the good in people. She also performs direct address narration for much of the story.

Grace − 29, Sherry's sister. Depressed, but in a funny way. Recently dumped by her boyfriend, Grace now lives on her mother's sofa in a fetal position, curled up around a bottle of whisky, venting, singing karaoke, and watching endless replays of Top Gun. She’s been stealing her ex’s valuables, and recently kidnapped his 2 Chihuahuas, hoping it will motivate him to return her phone calls.

Zack – 19. Unable to express his vulnerable feelings about the unexpected death of his mother, he appears to be a monosyllabic, blunt, teenage boy with anger management issues and a snide, snarky opinion about everything. In his private moments he can be found hiding in his mom’s closet hugging her favorite pair of shoes. He develops a crush on Sherry. At heart he is a goofy, good-hearted kid who is currently lost, acting out and in denial.

Joseph − 50ish. Zack’s father. Somewhat dweeby. He is a middle school principal and the former high school sweetheart of Sherry’s mother. Desperately sad over the recent death of his wife in a car accident, he’s represses his feelings by keeping busy and upbeat. He carries a torch for Sherry’s mom. CAST

GOOD PEOPLE
by David Lindsay-Abaire
Contract dates: Feb 24 – Mar 23, 2014.
All characters except Mike and Kate need a South Boston accent.

Seeking:

Margaret − white, about 50. Working class. Proud. A scrappy survivor. She has made sacrifices in her life for the sake of love.

Stevie − white, late 20s. Put upon assistant manager of a “Dollar Store”. He does what he’s told and doesn’t believe he has a choice. He is at heart a good man with a generous core, but he’d be taken advantage of and eaten alive if he showed that.

Dottie – white, Mid-sixties. Working class. Margaret’s landlady and sometime babysitter, she is scattered, brash, self-centered and a little ditzy. Makes “craft” rabbits out of flowerpots and cotton balls.

Jean – white, about 50. Working class. Margaret’s loyal and blunt friend. If there’s something about you worthy of criticism or mockery, and your best friend won’t say it, Jean will. She calls a spade a spade.

Mike – white, about 50. A former lower class “southie”, he escaped the neighborhood and went on to become a wealthy and successful doctor. Although he’s somewhat uncomfortable being reminded of where he’s from, he also has a powerful need to be seen as a “good guy” who hasn’t become a snob. He has a temper and an arrogance that he’s learned to control, but he can be triggered to reveal the old boy from the neighborhood. Margaret’s former high school boyfriend.

Kate – African-American, early/mid 30s. Mike’s young and attractive yuppie wife. Intelligent, articulate strong-willed, perceptive and well educated, she comes from an advantaged background, and might even be perceived as a little spoiled. She sees the truth of everything.

MOONLIGHT AND MAGNOLIAS
by Ron Hutchinson
Contract dates: Apr 14 – May 11, 2014.
This is a funny and fast-paced farce in the style of His Girl Friday.

seeking:

David O. Selznick – 40s to 50s. The quintessential brilliant, bullying, harried, over-the-top Hollywood producer. CAST

Ben Hecht – late 30s to mid 40s. Jewish. Famous Chicago journalist and playwright, now selling out in LA. Too smart and smart ass for his own good.

Victor Fleming – late 30s to 50s. Former chauffer, now a preening, egotistical, narcissistic and famous movie director.

Miss Poppenghul – 30-50’s, Selznick’s secretary. She has seen it all and is never fazed.
