2012-13 Season, with roles for which Equity contracts will be considered:
THE BOOK CLUB PLAY by Karen Zacarias. Director: TBA. Contract dates: Oct 1 – Oct 28, 2012.
This is a wacky, hip and intelligent comedy in the style of Frazier and/or Friends.
ANA: (female, 30’s-early 40’s) Pronounced “Ah-nuh”, but in college she was “Annie”. Beautiful. Charming. Smart. Accomplished. Organized. A style columnist for the daily paper. A cheerful hyper-controlling hostess and the“Mother Bee” of the bookclub. Also plays MRS. SIMPSON-RETIRED LIBRARIAN.
ROB: (male, 30’s - early 40’s) ANA’S attractive, underachieving, ex-jock husband who is starting to search for meaning. He prefers seeing the movie to reading the book. He is from an upper crust background and met ANA when he was an athlete in college on the rowing team. Also plays SAM-WAL-MART GUY.
WILL: (male, 30’s-early 40’s) ROB’s well read, highly intellectual, very well dressed college roommate, ie, David Hyde Piece type. Sometimes mistaken for gay, he was ANA’s former boyfriend and unexpectedly discovers he actually is gay in the course of the play. Also plays FRANK-SECRET SERVICE AGENT.
JEN: (female, 30’s) ANA’s friend. Disorganized and somewhat lacking in self-confidence, she tends to burst out with awkward comments filled with the truth. Unmarried, she is oblivious to her own attractiveness, and probably sees herself as more of a character “sidekick”. Also plays ELSA-JADED LITERARY AGENT.
LILY: (African American female, 20’s) A young and hip go-getter, she is on the cusp of all current trends and yet can still put her foot in her mouth in social occasions. Intelligent and a great lover of books, she is ANA’s protégé at the paper. Also plays-DAWN DOCTOR.
ALEX: (White, African American, Latino, Middle Eastern, or Asian, 30’s) The NEW GUY. An attractive, charismatic and very hip, highly perceptive, well read Professor of Comparative Literature whose girlfriend left him because he didn’t know who Edward Cullen was. Repentant of his cultural snobbishness, he has become a “straight shooter” who unknowingly offers perceptive insights and challenges the comfort of the book club. Also plays-CARL-BOOK DEALER.
A CHRISTMAS CAROL by Christopher Schario. Directed by the author. Contract dates: Nov 26 – Dec 9, 2012.
This adaptation features a small cast playing multiple roles and one actor playing Scrooge. All actors perform narration of Dickens text, as well as scene work. Both British dialect and Standard American Speech are used in this adaptation. Show requires versatile actors who make playful choices and are good with language.
All AEA roles (Scrooge, Marley, Bob and Mrs. Cratchit) are CAST. Auditioning performers will be considered as possible (emergency) replacements, should any become necessary.
THE HOUND OF THE BASKERVILLES by Canny & Nicholson. Director TBA. Contract dates: January 7 – February 3, 2013.
Requires a variety of British dialects and is similar in comic style to The Complete Wks of William Shakespeare abridged.
ACTOR 1: 30-40’s, Plays Sherlock Holmes, Yokel 1, Stapleton, Cecille, Barrymore, Mrs. Barrymore, Hermit
ACTOR 2: 30-40’s, Charles Baskerville, Mortimer, Sir Henry, Cabbie, Yokel 2
ACTOR 3: 30-50, Watson – befuddled but well intentioned sidekick of Sherlock Holmes.
TIME STANDS STILL by Donald Margulies. Director: Christopher Schario. Contract dates: Feb 25 – March 24, 2013.
SARAH GOODWIN: Late 30’s early 40’s, a photojournalist. Simultaneously idealistic and jaded. Travels from war zone to earthquake to famine, documenting human suffering. An adrenaline junkie. Long time live in lover of James, she is uncomfortable with the thought of living a simple domestic life.
JAMES DODD: late 30’s early 40’s, a freelance journalist and war zone junkie. Though he’s in love with Sarah, something has changed in him when he experienced a personal trauma he in the war zone and the possibility of Sarah being killed. He has lost his taste for the thrill of catastrophe.
RICHARD EHRLICH: 55, a photo editor. A smart, acerbic, man of the world. Like Sarah and James, he’s simultaneously idealistic and jaded. Suddenly, inexplicably, he finds himself totally in love with a much younger woman and is willing to take the leap into ridicule, fatherhood and the unknown.
MANDY BLOOM: 25, an event planner. Hip, naïve, trusting, earnest and hopeful. Unlike the other three, her idealism is still pure. Intelligent people who meet her might dismiss her intellect and sum her up as shallow.
THE LAST ROMANCE by Joe DiPietro. Director: Janet Mitchko. Contract Dates: April 15 – May 12, 2013.
RALPH BELLINI: 80. Italian. He is genuinely charming with a warm sense of humor that is flirtatious without being threatening or off-putting. His thwarted dream was to sing at the MET and he has a palpable passion for opera. Currently a widower living with his sister, he unexpectedly finds himself falling in love with a woman he meets in the park and is willing to change his life.
CAROL REYNOLDS: 70’s, attractive, proper, well dressed. Opinionated and slightly uptight, she appears aloof at first, but slowly thaws as her heart opens and she falls in love with Ralph.
ROSE TAGLIATELLE: 70’s, Ralph’s sister. Abandoned by her husband 22 years ago, she is unwilling to accept that he won’t come back. Over the years, she has grown bitter and suspicious, and is over-protective of her brother Ralph, who she now lives with. Looking after and cooking for Ralph is the only thing she has to live for.
THE YOUNG MAN (Young Ralph): early 20’s, baby faced with a beautiful operatic singing voice who dreams of singing at the MET.
