SYNOPSIS: In a magical kingdom beneath the sea, the beautiful young mermaid Ariel longs to leave her ocean home to live in the world above. Based on one of Hans Christian Anderson's most beloved stories, with music by eight-time Academy Award winner Alan Menken, it's a hauntingly beautiful love story for the ages.

Seeking to cast a very diverse company of strong actors who sing, move extremely well and dance (including tap). Seasoned performers of all types and ethnic backgrounds who enjoy the collaborative artistic process in a highly creative environment are strongly encouraged to audition.

Callbacks: Monday 11/3/14, 10:00 AM - 6:00 PM. Callbacks are by invitation ONLY. Actors will be notified by email if they are expected to return for callbacks. Sides and music will be distributed before and at callbacks; please be as familiar with the show as possible if you are called back and be prepared to dance and/or tap if asked.

Theatre’s casting note: ''Because of the short, intense rehearsal schedule, we are open and interested in seeing performers who may have done the show before. But it is NOT a requirement.''

Seeking: All roles are open/available; pay for Union AND Non-Union performers (EMC points available). NO transportation pay or reimbursement.

ARIEL
(Female, early to mid 20’s, All Ethnicities) Must play a believable 18 year old and be small in stature. King Triton’s youngest daughter. Her longing for knowledge and acceptance leads her to the surface where she falls in love with Prince Eric. She doesn’t fit into the world of the sea, but knows that she belongs in the world above. Ariel is hard headed, naïve and overwhelmed with emotions – often getting her into trouble but is also kind hearted and beautiful. Must be a strong actor and singer.
Soprano with belt. Range: Ab3-Gb5

PRINCE ERIC
(Male, early to late 20’s, All Ethnicities) The handsome and seafaring human prince. He is enraptured by Ariel’s beautiful voice and is on a quest to find her. He is strong, affable and has a buoyant, adventurous nature, along with a penchant for causing Grimsby a headache. Eric is more comfortable on the sea than in the kingdom. Seeking a charming performer and a strong actor with a sensitive nature. Range:B2-G4

URSULA
(Female or Male, mid 30’s to late 40’s, All Ethnicities) The manipulative and cunning sea witch. She is King Triton’s jealous, half-octopus sister who has been banished for killing his wife and attempting to usurp the kingdom. Ursula is extremely calculating, deceptive and shrewd. Must be superb at comedy - part Shakespearean actor with all the flair, flamboyance and theatricality and part used-car salesman with a touch of con artist. Mezzo or Tenor with excellent Broadway belt. We are interested in seeing not only female performers, but because the design of Ursula was based upon drag performer Divine; we are also interested in seeing men who can do or have done drag. Range: Eb3-C5

SEBASTIAN
(Male, ages 30’s-40’s, African Descent, African American) A crab and trusted advisor to King Triton. He speaks in a Jamaican accent. Sebastian’s brooding attitude, paranoia and constant supervision is a thorn in Ariel’s side, but his loyalty to the King helps him to rise above and eventually become quite fond of the girl. High Baritone. Range: Bb2-C5

KING TRITON
(Male, late 30’s to mid 40’s, All Ethnicities) Ariel’s father and ruler of the Merfolk.
Beneath his imposing presence and commanding nature is a concerned, harried single father of seven girls. He clashes with Ariel because they are both strong-willed and short-tempered, and he is increasingly skeptical of humans. He worries about Ariel’s desire to be human only because he loves her so much. Rich, luxurious baritone who is in excellent physical shape preferred. Range: Ab2-F4

FLOUNDER
(Male, mid to late teens to early 20’s, All Ethnicities) Must believably play a 16 year old. Ariel’s best fish friend. He has a bit of a crush on Ariel but is too embarrassed and shy to let her know. He is a loyal companion and can panic in stressful situations, causing him to blurt out information he should keep secret. Baritone. Range: A2-G4

GRIMSBY
(Male, 40’s - 50’s, All Ethnicities) Prince Eric’s faithful, prim and proper and worrisome
manservant, guardian and confidant. Must have high style comic skills. Although he lacks a sense of humor about Eric’s maritime escapades, he wants him to be happy and take his rightful place in the kingdom, thus following the late King’s request. Baritone. Range: C3-C4

SCUTTLE
(Male, 30’s-40’s, All Ethnicities) A loquacious, disheveled and nonsensical seagull. He
fancies himself an expert on the human world. He is funny and off-beat. Looking for a good singer with good comedic timing who is willing to have fun with Scuttle’s eccentricities. Must be good comedian/vaudevillian and must tap. Baritone. Range: C3-G4

FLOTSAM and JETSAM
(Male, 20’s, All Ethnicities) Ursula’s slimy, unctuous and scheming eel minions. Must be able to move fluidly and have comic skills. High tenor and baritone.
Flotsam Range:E3-C5
Jetsam Range: B2-A4

ENSEMBLE: [The featured roles below will come out of the ensemble of 6 men & 6 women]

Chef Louis:
Male, late 20’s-mid 40’s, All Ethnicities) is the over-the-top head chef in the palace. He is always wild and frenetic. This is an excellent featured role for a comedic performer. Range: Bb2-A4

The Six Mersisters (Aquata, Andrina, Arista, Atina, Adella, Allana):
(Female, ages 18+, All Ethnicities) Ariel’s siblings, full of personality and sass. These are great roles to showcase talented singers and dancers who can create and play six distinctive characters. They also play the six Princesses who try everything they can to win the heart of Prince Eric at the vocal contest. None of them possess the voice Prince Eric is searching for.

The Pilot:
(Male, 30’s-40’s, All Ethnicities) is the head sailor on Prince Eric’s ship. This nautical expert entertains the sailors with wild tales of the sea. Needs good singing voice.

The Seahorse:
(Male, late 20’s - 30’s, All Ethnicities) The court herald for King Triton. Clear speaking
voice.

The Sailors:
(Males & Females, ages 18+, All Ethnicities) The crew of Prince Eric’s ship. They are
eager for adventure and ready to tackle a storm. The Sailors can be played by men and women. Would love to have the “singing sailors” double as dancers and Sea Creatures.

The Sea Creatures:
(Males & Females, ages 18+, All Ethnicities ) are the ensemble under water animals in King Triton’s court.
