PREPARATION
Please prepare a short, contemporary musical theatre song that shows off range and character. If auditioning for UPSHAW, please prepare a short monologue in the style of the character as described above. A piano accompanist will be provided. Please bring a headshot and resume stapled together.

BREAKDOWN
[RALPH KRAMDEN]
Male, 40’s. Caucasian. Heavy set, blusterous, a dreamer, full of himself in the best way. A schemer. (Reference YouTube clips of Jackie Gleason’s performance in the television show episodes “The $99,000 Answer” and “The Golfer”). Actors should find a balance between their own interpretation of the character and the character we know from the television series. Must have an excellent baritone voice and have fantastic comedic timing. PRINCIPAL.
[ALICE KRAMDEN]
Female, mid-30s-late 40s. Caucasian. Caustic, sarcastic, yet very funny in her retorts to Ralph. A loving and caring wife underneath the veneer of her jabs at Ralph. (Reference YouTube clips of Audrey Meadows’ performance in the television show). Actors should find a balance between their own interpretation of the character and the character we know from the television series. Must be able to deliver zingers with effortlessly well-placed comedic timing. Must have a fantastic voice with a high belt. PRINCIPAL.
[ED NORTON]
Male, 40s. Caucasian. Tall, lanky, comedic, a little dumb, sweet and true blue. Working class, physical. (Reference YouTube clips of Art Carney’s performance in the television show- . “The $99,000 Answer” and “The Golfer” are two of the best). Actors should find a balance between their own interpretation of the character and the character we know from the television series. Must have a strong baritone voice and have excellent physical and comedic timing. PRINCIPAL.
[TRIXIE NORTON]
Female, mid 30s-early 40s. Caucasian. Not like Trixie in the television series. Sexy and beautiful… like Adelaide in “Guys and Dolls”… a background as a singer, takes a job singing at El Morocco. Must have an excellent voice with a strong belt, have excellent comedic timing and dance and tap very well. PRINCIPAL.
[BRYCE BENNETT]
Male, 40’s-50’s. Any ethnicity. A shark in an Ad Agency. Leading Man type (Jon Hamm in Mad Men). Must be very funny, even though he’s harassed and panicked by Upshaw in their first scene together, he’s a shark that’s being out-sharked. Manipulates Norton, always three steps ahead. Must have a great baritone singing voice and have great comedic timing. PRINCIPAL.
[OLD MAN FACCIAMATTA]
Male, 70’s-80’s. Any ethnicity. Must be able to do an Italian accent. Seemingly nice, turns vicious but in a funny, likeable manner. Ideally seeking a strong mover. Must sing very well. PRINCIPAL.
[UPSHAW]
Male, 50’s-60’s. Any ethnicity. Tough, funny, boss who speaks in a rapid staccato manner. Enjoys comedic riding of employees in a very dry, deadpan manner. Must have great comic timing. Non-singing role. PRINCIPAL.
