New play with incidental music. Time: 2002 and the past. Setting: The city, the country, the mind.
Playgrounds and pianos suffuse the story of two bi-racial couples a generation apart with delight and music. This highly theatrical play follows 30-something jazz singer Soph in and out of strange dreams and tangled relationships, as she discovers more about her absentee-father’s history with an American expat, and comes face to face with her own struggle in a relationship with the brilliant and enigmatic Math.
Seeking (all roles are available):
Note: Strong physicality and playfulness important for all roles.
Soph (Sophia):
African American woman, early 30s. Blues/jazz singer. Armored. Feels things deeply. Believes Math is her soul mate. Ability to play classical piano is a bonus.
Math (Matthew):
Caucasian man, early 30s. Penchant for speechifying and wordplay. Utterly charming. Ability to play classical piano is a bonus.
Turn (Turner):
African American man, late 50s. Soph’s absentee-father. Lives and breathes activism. Suze’s soul mate.
Suze (Susan):
Caucasian woman, late 50s. Daughter of a senator. Still carries a torch for Turn. Needs someone to understand, to pass on her legacy.
