BREAKDOWN

All characters are male.

THE BOY WHO DANCED ON AIR is a modern-day love story set in rural Afghanistan. Paiman and Feda have spent their young lives as dancers in the world of bacha bazi, where wealthy men take in boys from poor families, train them to dance at parties, and often abuse them. The two boys’ chance meeting changes the course of their lives and sets them on a journey to find their independence in this musical fable about love, tradition, morality and the strength of the human spirit.

seeking:

PAIMAN
Male, Middle Eastern, 15 years old (seeking actor 18+ to play teenager)) Quiet and innocent but with a sense of resolve, self, and integrity; a technically accomplished and graceful dancer, but restrained by an inner longing; high pop tenor; should be completely at home and comfortable in the high F-A range; score calls for a high B occasionally; the part generally sits high; voice should sound very youthful and vibrant; should be a strong dancer.

FEDA
Male, Middle Eastern, 17 years old (seeking actor 18+ to play teenager) Brash, confident exterior; however, harbors a deep well of insecurities; brave soul desperately looking for a gentle, authentic love; powerful dancer capable of captivating an entire audience with ease; high pop tenor; should be comfortable singing high Fs and Gs, but capable of handling mid-range; mid-range should be warm and appealing; does a lot of harmonizing; should be a strong dancer. Strong falsetto.

JAHANDAR
Male, Middle Eastern, 30s-40s. Paiman’s Master; affluent and a leader in his small rural community; intense and dedicated; deeply traditional; genuinely loves Paiman and is capable of paternal kindness and warmth, but equally capable of cruelty in the name of what he believes; Bari-Tenor; low B to high F sharp; pop/musical theatre style; strong falsetto up to B flat.

ZEMAR
Male, Middle Eastern, 30s-40s. Feda’s Master; affluent and influential in his small rural community; light-hearted, playful, and mischievous; deeply traditional, but his world-weariness has dulled his concern for the well-being of others; Any voice type, part singing only, so, must be good with harmonies.

THE UNKNOWN MAN
Male, Middle Eastern, 30s-40s. Had we met him years earlier, he would have been a naïve dreamer; now he is weathered and aged beyond his years as he seems to carry the weight of tragedy on his shoulders; pop tenor; up to A; the high notes can be a mix; part generally sits in the mid-range; pop/musical theater style.

ENSEMBLE ACTOR 1
Male, Middle Eastern, 20s-40s. Must be able to sing and act well.

ENSEMBLE ACTOR 2
Male, Middle Eastern, 20s-40s. Must be able to sing and act well.
