Breakdown

ALL REHEARSALS AND PERFORMANCES ARE IN TRENTON, NEW JERSEY.

TAMER OF HORSES
Hector, a streetwise troublemaker and runaway from a Trenton detention center, finds shelter in a barn owned by Ty and Georgiane Fletcher, a black couple living on a farm in rural New Jersey. Ty, a former classics teacher, offers sanctuary on one condition: Hector must learn to read The Iliad. Words from Homer’s epic tale take their place next to urban rap lyrics as the two match wits in a class struggle for survival.

SEEKING:

HECTOR
Male, 17. The runt of his street gang. He is callous at times, but he has a thirst to learn. A true chameleon, he is tight and close-lipped, but can be charming, charismatic and extraordinarily passionate. He is unpredictable and spirited. When he’s confronted with the consequences of his actions, we see the confused boy underneath his façade.

GEORGIANE:
Female, African American, late 30s. Attractive, well-spoken, loving, strong. Instinctually kind and giving, and occasionally pays the price for her openness. She’s charming and well-educated and has struggled to get where she is now—so she is reluctant to risk the happiness she’s found.

TY
Male, African American, late 30s. Stubborn, passionate, poetic. He is a hard worker and is good with his hands. He is also proud, sometimes to his detriment. Being a gentleman is important to him. Ty is an academic and a teacher at heart, but is currently restoring antique furniture.
